Anne Frank could have slipped into anonymity had it not been for Miep Gies finding the diary Anne had been writing while she and her family were forced into hiding in the Secret Annex. This diary, a staple of what “was”, is a raw and revealing account of a teenager growing up in confinement. She relates this confinement, sharing intimate details about what she sees and what she feels. She is also very aware of life beyond her Annex window.
This, then, is the basis for this year’s Haddonfield Memorial High School Drama Club fall play, aptly titled Anne Frank and the World Outside the Secret Annex. Using several of Anne’s actual diary entries, this original play (written by former HMHS actors) embraces the comings and goings of Anne, those who hid with her, and what was happening in the world during those years, 1942 – 1944. We listen, as Anne did, to radio reporters and singers, who kept her abreast of “life” as it was happening.
