A Dirty Dozen of Haddonfield Street Signs Swiped in Two Days

In the latest in a series of brazen crimes, thieves destroy signs.

Haddonfield Police reported 12 street signs stolen over two days last week.

The signs were reported missing from Colonial Ridge Drive and Upland Way, Hickory Lane and Warwick Road, Jefferson Avenue and Warwick Road, and Montwell Avenue and Warwick Road on Thursday. Four more signs were reported missing the next day, at Warwick Road and Glenwood, and West Park and Washington avenues.

Four of the signs were recovered nearby, but all were ruined, police said.

No suspects or arrests were announced.

Last August, 11 street signs were reported stolen in a similar incident. Haddonfield has been a frequent target of metal thieves over the last two years. Several dozen thefts of copper downspouts have been reported over that time.

Police have not reported any motive for the sign thefts, but the borough commissioners are concerned.

"We should put this in the paper," Mayor Tish Colombi, one of three borough commissioners said in June. "It's costly to replace these signs. People need to know what's happening."

Here is a crazy train of thought: Someone manufactured these signs. We purchased the signs from this manufacturer. What if someone called the manufacturer and asked what they recommended to try to prevent this type of theft from occurring in the future? I know we still do business with this manufacturer, because there are loads of extra signs littering the area at Public Works, across from the water department office. Call me crazy, but telling the public that 'this is costly' doesn't really solve the problem. Let's see what we can do about solving the problem. then communicate what we did to the residents. MAKE SENSE???

So....it appears to have happened again tonight. Dozens of trash cans spilled, glass everywhere at the end of the street (near Warwick).....teenage kids walking away as if nothing happened, with a street sign in hand. Luckily, the cops were called and they (a few of them) were caught! It is amazing that these kids had no problem creating trouble for their own neighbors (not positive, but seemed to be local neighborhood kids).....AND they weren't running....they casually strolled away, with no fear whatsoever. Until they realized we saw and the cops pulled up, that is. Hopefully, the others in the group are turned in as well, and they will learn their lesson....
