Fall Festivities Abound at Springdale Farms
'Tis the season...for pie!
South Jersey experienced its first taste of fall this past week—temperatures dipping, the familiar nip of autumn in the air. But before you go jumping the shark and thinking about Christmas (you know who you are), let us take a moment and revel in the majesty that is fall: pumpkin pie, apple cider, pumpkin pie, corn mazes, pumpkin pie... Fall is amazing, people. Recognize.
Springdale Farms is all about the autumn love, and has tons of festivities planned for the season, including pumpkin picking, a corn maze—this year features a train theme, and runs through Nov. 4—and group hayrides. They also offer evening campfire hayrides, which can be booked in advance for groups of 20 or more.
The farm's event coordinator, Jackie Caputo, says that while an overly wet August wreaked havoc with the 2010 pumpkin crop, and Hurricane Irene "completely wiped out" crops last year, 2012 was "a better pumpkin crop than we've had in a number of years. This year was pretty decent for us."
The Farm also sells locally grown produce, including broccoli, cauliflower, yellow beans, and some remaining tomatoes and corn. On the sweet side, they feature a different pie every month, a custom that really should be observed everywhere. October's pie is apple cinnamon, and November's is still to be determined. Fingers crossed for pumpkin!
Their bakery offers a tempting array of other pies, cakes, cookies, and other treats. Caputo says the farm will begin taking Thanksgiving pie orders within the next couple of weeks. (And don't forget, their cider doughnuts are life-changing.)
The Farm also sells a variety of pastas from Severino Pasta in Westmont, along with sauces, fresh herbs, frozen lasagnas and pot pies, cheeses, jellies, honey, coffee and tea.
If you're looking for Halloween- and autumn-themed decorations, Springdale Farm Market has you covered—decorative gourds, lawn decor, ghosts, witches and more. You can also pick up potted plants and flowers. The place is hoppin' on weekends, but parking is plentiful and checkout is quick and efficient.
