Just When You Thought Your 350-lb. Safe Was Safe...

A safe with a loaded gun and jewelry inside was stolen, topping the Haddonfield police blotter this week.

A resident in the unit block of Lane of Acres said a 350-pound safe was stolen from the home on Friday, March 23 between 6 and 10:15 p.m., according to a police report.

The safe contained a loaded gun, jewelry, silverware and "expensive watches," the resident said. The weapon was registered. Police have reported no suspects.

A man in the 100 block of Kings Highway West said someone entered his home around 10:15 a.m. on March 20 while he was upstairs working. The thief made off with an $11,000 Breitling watch.

The man said he thinks the thief was scared away by his dog barking and him coming down the stairs. He told a reporter that the watch was of "priceless sentimental value as it was a gift from my wife. I hope they catch this bastard!"

6-Year-Old Boy's Bike Stolen

A woman reported her son's unlocked bike was stolen overnight from in front of their home in the 200 block of Hawthorne Ave. on March 18. She said the bike was near the sidewalk when last seen.

Whoa. Is it just me or is there a serious uptick of crime in Haddonfield? The safe & the watch are very bold robberies. Lane of Acres sounds like an "inside job" meaning someone who has visited the house and already knew the safe was there And since 1 person probably can't move a 350lb safe, it means at least 2 people. That is an exclusive, dead-end street. The only people that would ever be driving there would be residents, and anyone working at/on the houses.

It's not just you. Burglaries are up significantly in Haddonfield. Some would blame the economy, but I think the increase has as much to do with the unbridled growth around the borders of Haddonfield. More and more people are crossing through Haddonfield every day to reach places like Wegmanns. Therefore it's easier for the bad guys to blend into the ever-increasing traffic in our town. I don't know that there's a good solution to deal with this problem other than for one to move to another area of the country. Haddonfield will not remain a relative oasis forever.
