Forever Young, AKA, Jamaican Me Crazy, Leaving Town

Local favorites HerSport and Forever Young Emporium are leaving Haddonfield in January. A third business, Georgie Girl, will close in June 2013.

Relocation signs on two mainstays in the Haddonfield Business District have many customers wondering why.

HerSport, a female athlete's "go to" source for apparel, field hockey, lacrosse and soccer gear is moving from its Kings Highway location on Jan. 1.

"We plan to open on Jan. 5 at our new location in Cherry Hill," owner Deb Gallagher said. "The ceilings are three feet higher and we will have a wider storefront making the store more interactive for field hockey and lacrosse players selecting equipment."

HerSport is a destination store for school teams around South Jersey.

"I looked for a space to accommodate our needs in Haddonfield, but nothing worked," Gallagher said Friday. "The current location does not have convenient parking for teams picking up orders, where the new location has parking in front of the store."

Forever Young Emporium, which is still known to many by its former name Jamaican Me Crazy, is planning to close its doors on Jan. 14. Owners Gary and Nina Reses said, "We have a terrific opportunity in a new development on the campus of Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ." The campus project, Rowan Boulevard, includes new dormitories, a hotel, parking and new retail space.

Gary and Nina spoke with the business recruiter for the Rowan project and said "they were looking for unique, independent businesses that fit the college lifestyle." Any Forever Young Emporium shopper can attest that the product line fits that lifestyle.

When asked about keeping the Haddonfield store open while they expand, Gary said, "Personally, it is impossible to keep the Haddonfield store open from a management perspective. With one store, we'll still be able to have a life."

Another downtown business, the clothing boutique Georgie Girl, is closing in June 2013. Although they had a really good holiday season, Cindy Harris, owner of Georgie Girl said, "After nine years in Haddonfield, we are closing in June—we are moving on to greener pastures, out of New Jersey."

New stores on the way

Haddonfield's retail coordinator Remi Fortunato has been hard at work bringing new stores and restaurants to the business district. Saxby's, a new coffee shop and restaurant, is in the process of remodeling the space at Kings Highway and Chestnut Street. Fortunato expects Saxby's to open sometime in January.

The HerSport location will not be empty for long. The space was leased to an upscale boutique/consignment shop called "Second Time Around."

What does this tell you....WAKE UP Haddonfield with all its charm and little town feel does not draw the crowds like it used to...when will the Powers of Be and the locals realize that if you want the businesses to stay you need to SUPPORT THEM...the rents are out of line not to mention all the hoops you need to jump thru to not just open but to stay in business...they charge you for everything and still want more...when will all the associations, mayor, commisssioners etc etc realize that unless you step up and do something to support the Mom and Pop businesses that are struggling to maintain you will have a "charming ghost town". These businesses that are leaving were hard working people that did what they could to bring people into town but without the SUPPORT of the locals and yes I am talking to you and especially the Powers of Be (lead by example) then Haddonfield will become what downtown Medford has a ghost town. WAKE UP put some time into helping what you have left forget parking kiosks and how big a sign is or making sure the little lights are not in your windows past Jan..really...or wait lets put the efforts into a new field that you don't need....get your heads out of your $%^ and realize what is really important.

ihavehadit, I love your name as well as your message. The residents of Haddonfield are the ones that have to take care of change. The people in charge are going to keep on doing things just as they always have.
The future of the residents and our downtown is more important than turfed sports complexes. Vote no on the Bancroft bond and then vote in May for a new direction.
As a senior I was talking to the other day said, "It's time for this elitist Haddonfield yuppie, or Huppie mentality to go". The Huppies...thanks for that gem, Mr. Shaeffer!

I love that! Huppie :) It just about sums it up too. I do agree with that very much. The downtown feels too exclusive for my taste. I live here and I can't say that I have shopped much downtown or dined at all in the last 5 years. It doesn't suit my budget or my tastes at all. I think if Haddonfield started listening to the people then good businesses would decide to stay and there would be more business from different types of consumers. I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of this new coffee shop being constructed and plan to stay far far away from it. It screams yuppie! Why can't we bring a more relaxed and inviting vibe into town instead of one that your friend calls the huppie mentality? So sad to see Jamaican me Crazy go : ( That was about the only fun store in town.

Sad fact of the matter is that taxes in this town don't leave much room in the wallet for disposable income, which is the lifeblood of these businesses. And now with the impending rise in fed taxes associated with supporting Obama's Cloward Piven strategy, our Mad Max future is just around the corner.

Great comments, all! I also heard that auto and home owner's insurance are predicted rise in 2013 in New Jersey....it just never ends. As far as downtown, I remember Finney Woods, Talbots, Blocks Shoes....where you didn't have to sell a kidney to purchase an article of clothing. Another coffee shop?! Just what we need... I wish we still had a pet supply store, hardware store and a real bakery. Seems to me that the CVS, Acme and Harrison's are the only stores that cater to the real needs of the community. I love Mr. S's comment about the Huppies....but was he talking about the l980's Huppies....who were annoying; or their progeny...who are, if possible, even more annoying! It seems that beautiful, bucolic Haddonfield isn't about character anymore, but is all about image.

Yes, believe it or not ANOTHER coffee shop and not an independently owned one - it's a Starbucks wannabe : http://saxbyscoffee.com/. Another boring, overly priced coffee chain to appeal to people who like spending $7 on a cup of burnt coffee. It's one block from Starbucks to boot. Talk about a waste of space!

That is part of the reason I go to Jersey Java & Tea because I enjoy the coffee more but primarily because it is independently owned.

The Jersey Java is great. The staff is wonderful and the coffee is really good, no burnt Starbucks product there.
Talking about the town not looking out for businesses, on First Night the Java has all kinds of programs planned and they asked the Mayor if they could have the first Night trolly make a few trips to them during the evening. They were turned down.

On a positive note, A Taste of Olive is doing well. We thank all our friends and neighbors who came out to "Buy Local" this holiday season!
