"In 1913, the Haddon Fortnightly created a swimming hole by constructing a dam across a stream running through Mountwell Woods," according to Cliff Brunker of the Historical Society of Haddonfield. "They did this with cobblestones that had been removed from Kings Highway after it was paved."

Mountwell could be a great area for the Environmental Center that's been talked about. Interesting how the Haddon Fortnightly had the ingenuity to recycle Kings Highway's cobblestones to create something that benefited so many residents.

The Civic Association erected the bathhouse, shown in the second photo, in 1916. As part of a public-works project in 1937, a cement pool replaced the original sand-bottom swimming hole which can be seen in the third photo.

I was told the pool was built by the wpa. An old resident and Public Works employee (deceased) told me he was a life guard at the pool as a teenager.
I was in that pool when I was 5 years old, I remember it was really cold. One of the wells for the water plant was used to fill it.
