Lost Haddonfield: Samuel Nicholson Rhoads

Rhoads loved both the history and the natural history of Haddonfield. The past comes alive in pictures.

Always an outdoorsman, Samuel Nicholson Rhoads (1862-1952), collected bird specimens for the Academy of Natural Sciences from a very early age.

He was raised on Haddon Avenue in the house that once stood behind the Haddonfield Public Library and in Boxwood Hall, 65 Haddon Ave., which was occupied by his grandfather, Samuel Nicholson, and his mother’s sisters, Sarah and Rebecca Nicholson, in whose gardens he first learned his love of the natural world.

These pictures are from the archives of the Historical Society of Haddonfield.
