"In 1868, the public school trustees discussed the possibility of establishing classes for black children, according to 'Lost Haddonfield,' by Douglas B. Rauschenberger and Katherine Mansfield Tassini. "The first public classes for blacks were held there in September 1869. A new school for blacks was built in 1904 at 230 Douglass Avenue, adjacent to the black community. The building...was simply known as School #4. Frances Howard, the kindergarten teacher, is seen with her class in front of the school in a 1921 picture."
