UPDATE: Prisoner Disarms Gloucester Twp. Cop, Shoots and Injures 3 Officers

Eddie Jones III, of Willingboro, grabs a firearm from a police officer's holster, fires the gun and injures three cops before being fatally shot.

UPDATE 2:41 p.m. 12/30: Gloucester Township Police Sgt. James Garber will be released from Cooper University Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound sustained in the police station shootout Friday morning, on Sunday afternoon.

He will be welcomed at his home in Gloucester Township's Somerdale section by members of the Police Department, Boy Scout Troop 811, Warriors' Watch, and local fire and and EMS departments.

----------

Three police officers injured when they were shot inside Gloucester Township police headquarters early Friday morning are on the mend, according to authorities.

The alleged shooter—Eddie Jones III, 39, of Willingboro—was killed in return fire at the scene, Gloucester Township Police Chief W. Harry Earle announced during a press conference held at the municipal building Friday afternoon.

The shooting incident occurred around 5:30 a.m.—more than four hours after Jones was taken into custody without incident on suspicion he was stalking an ex-girlfriend, Earle said.

While being processing at the police station, Jones tackled and was able to grab a gun from Ptl. Ruth Burns, then fired the officer's service weapon several times, Earle said. Burns had removed handcuffs from Jones.

Sgts. James Garber and Kevin Thyne returned fire on Jones, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities were not immediately saying how many times Jones had been shot or how many shots Jones fired from Burns' duty weapon, which was identified as a Sig Sauer P229 .40-caliber handgun. The .40-caliber Sig Sauer holds 13 total rounds, Earle said.

"Today, our community experienced an unprovoked violent act against those who serve and protect the residents of Gloucester Township," Mayor David Mayer said at the press conference. "We are so very fortunate and we thank God that our officers are expected to fully recover."

Jones was employed by the New Jersey Department of Corrections (DOC) as a civilian communications operator. He was most recently assigned to Garden State Youth Correctional Facility, in Yardville, Mercer County, and had been a DOC employee since September 1997.

"An officer was viciously attacked in our police headquarters and was disarmed," Earle said. "The suspect attacked the officers and unleashed a barrage of gunfire at the officers. The officers responded with quick and decisive action."

Garber, a 13-year veteran, required surgery at Cooper University Hospital for a gunshot wound to his abdomen, Earle said. He is still recovering at the Camden hospital.

Thyne, an eight-year veteran, was shot in his duty belt, causing a laceration to his stomach, and sustained a graze wound to his chin in the incident.

Burns, who has been on the police force for a year, was shot in her foot during the incident.

Thyne and Burns had been released from Cooper by the time the 3 p.m. press conference began.

"I am so thankful that all of the officers involved are expected to make a full recovery," Earle said.

(To read Earle's full statement to the media, click on the PDF above.)

Garber also was shot in the chest, but the bullet was stopped by his body armor, Earle said. He also sustained a graze wound to his head.

All three police officers have been placed on administrative leave—standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

Police officers often remove handcuffs from prisoners at various points during processing, according to Earle.

"During the course of nearly all the processing of an arrested person, it is necessary at times to take off those handcuffs for fingerprinting, signing papers and preparing other documents," he said.

The police chief noted the ongoing investigation will include a review to determine whether Burns should have been armed at the time she removed the handcuffs from Jones and was attacked.

Deirdre Fedkenheuer, a DOC spokeswoman, referred all questions regarding Jones' involvement in the shooting incident to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating the incident with assistance from Gloucester Township Police Department.

Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk indicated early investigation has revealed Garber and Thyne were justified in their use of deadly force.

"At this point, all of the evidence points towards these officers returning fire," the prosecutor said. "After the weapon was secured from the one officer by the deceased and he fired the weapon, these officers returned fire. At this point, there's no evidence to indicate otherwise."

Earle told reporters surveillance video inside the police station captured the incident.

Police are not disclosing the location of Jones' arrest due to his apprehension being tied to an alleged incident of domestic violence.

Stay with Patch for updates on this developing story.

That's what I was going to say. It's SOP in every PD I've ever heard of for the officer to lock up their weapon when they get to the jail. And surely you don't have officers working in the jail with sidearms amongst the prisoners.

Folks: Please keep comments on this article on topic and stick to the facts from this case as we present them here at Patch and even as they may be presented in other media outlets. There may be other websites out there on which baseless accusations will be accepted and published. Just know this is not going to be one of them, so save yourself the keystrokes if that's what you want to write about. Feel free to speculate on other websites and among your family and friends. Are you asking for a total ban or sort of like a partial ban of ammo sales until 1pm on Sundays, you know, like the liquor ban in GT? We all see how our current liquor law prevents all of the DWI's and accidents on Sundays right? So yeah, I think by preventing the sales of all ammo before 1pm on Sunday's could reduce all violent crimes within GT for sure...

I can't believe the vitriol being spewed here. How about a little concern for the safety and recovery of three Gloucester Township police officers who were shot in the line of duty. Disgusting. I am so sick of hearing everyone using every thing that happens here to constantly complain about how awful life is here. Why don't you just move if you hate it so much!? This is not the time to talk about police department politics.
My prayers are with the officers as they recover from their injuries.

That is nothing to be proud of " No trial & no jail time= saving taxpayers money. and lest I forget " the perp is dead"- Unfortunately this is not how our Country and police should not be working. this same scenario used to happen to blacks in the south, as a matter of fact they never made it to booking. I am not trying to justify what occurred but I am just asking anyone to consider ALL other options and outcome to have led to PREVENTION of this situation, and that's what people for this deads man Civil Liberties will do. Its not so easy to do a murder or killing and the person has never scene a judge , been sentenced or convicted by a jury of his peers.Backwards thinking doesnt and shouldnt make citizens happy the man is dead we just want to know where was a taser gun and do they need to revise their "handling" of male suspects with double the brute strength of women differently? Let me check to see the status on women allowed to fight in military style combat- but then women are left alone to handle men who are scientifically known to over power them. say that to say men need not be chauvinistic but also be cognitive of this fact.. Was she required to ask for assistance with the suspect or did it on her on figuring she was not alone in the building. Murdering people are not that cut and dry ...every death deserves to have all the Ands, If, and but applied to it.

Three years is long enough to get politically connected in this township. Is there a tape to see what REALLY happened. It was a botched job and she should be taken off the force for acting inappropriately. In New York, she would have been gone, but it's obvious this is a back word town that is covered up with corruption and lies. It's no wonder they sent in the national news to get the real story. Leno called it a joke last night on TV. Three cops shot by one man because of a female cops who failed protocal.

What are some of YOU rambling about? The woman is a cop in a police station processing a peeping tom who was stalking a former girlfriend possibly with the intentions of killing the former girlfriend if the neighbour had NOT caught HIM sneaking through the bushes of the former girlfriends home and called the police on HIM. This should tell you the man was a predator and had no problems killing. If Officer Burns did not have a gun, Eddie Jones III could have easily killed Officer Burns with HIS own hands and then YOU all would be complaining about "why was SHE NOT armed?!?!" I honestly do believe that NO matter what happens, some of YOU commenters are NEVER happy unless YOU can complain!!!!!

Lets not "speculate"- We only have the police officers version, the guy is dead . Whatever real story comes out its embarrassing, negligent, and SUSPECT for a suspect to die in central booking. We don't know what this mans intention were and guys get a drink and go to ex's house trying to see if they see em when their new man aint around, and men know they carry gun's too if the ex look like he can beat them...But you get locked up ,pay fines for the gun and o jail time and off you go- You don't die in Central Booking. Its nice to have sympathy for the officers but that could be anyone child, citizen elderly loved on etc

Its about making the police buy insurance too for the guns they carry. Like did police train in martial arts, karate or any type of self- Defense? A really embarrassing situation and everyone lived, but it shows the officers are sleeping on their job and have become too comfortable because I'm gonna say what everyone else s thinking, which is : "If suspects can get to your gun faster than you can maybe you don't need to be carrying that gun" and Lets add this situation into the National discussion. Its easy for people to buy guns but you can't teach common sense. If it can happen to a police officer what makes gun totting vigilantes any different. No time to even taser him right, just kill ...Sadly the incident has happened but it will definitely be a part of the discussion. Require all gun carriers and police to buy gun insurance. His killing happened at a police station so obviously some procedure went wrong, even if he was carrying a gun and stalking he didn't deserve to die for that. Obviously he dont have a criminal record so police can't sully him. Alot of people fake police or Corrections Officer affiliation, whats new? But he shouldn't have died and her gun shouldnt have been taken that easily

Im not trying to be sexist but a small petite female like this NEVER should have been hired as a police officer. Unfortunately, this idea of "diversity" takes something as serious as police work and makes it into a "social experiment". Most of them end up getting put at desks, injured on duty any time they have to restrain a male, placed in in schools, or given created positions like a Dare Officer.

Monk you are not sexist, you just have common sense. We are not all equal regardless of what the liberal fools out there think. Women are at a clear disadvantage in a physical confrontation with a male, period. This offender lost his life because of two things. The first is because he was a fool and he chose to attack this officer. The second is because this female officer was disarmed. I just thank God that the three officers survived and that the outcome was positive.

All of the rederick and bantering isn't getting Mr. Jones any closer to being with his family who is grieving. All of these slanderous comments aren't helping make these officers healing any easier. All of the name calling and finger pointing leads no where. Heros were faced with danger. A man was faced with a decision. We have all learned of cause and affect. No matter what the protocol, policies or procedures are Mr. Jones, not Officer Burns nor Sgt Garber nor Sgt Thyne made the decision to disarm an officer and use the weapon against officers. This was Mr. Jones decision alone and he will need to face his maker. So I beg all please pray for each other, pray for the officers and their families. And pray for Mr. Jones and his family. There is a healing process for everyone, let them heal!

Gender should not matter in this case. The Officer could have been 6.2 and 185 pounds male and the suspect could have still unarmed the person and fired the gun. Officers doing the booking should have been more alert. Better training could be needed by the local police.

My very strong educated guess here is that after the gunsmoke has cleared somewhat we're going to find out that the three cops probably shot each other, and that poor idiot went down in a hail of gunfire in another suicide by cop scenario, just like the one in N.Y., where the poor schmuck never even got off a shot, and was probably reaching for a pack of cigarettes. And looking at "officer" Burns it's pretty easy to see why she got hired. Can't we just station all these local so-called police in schools and in movie theaters with walkie-talkies and leave the real police work to professionals?

He disarmed a cop, according to the official account. He wasn't fired on for reaching for cigarettes or anything else in his own pockets. In other words, they didn't shoot him because he may have been going for a weapon, as you suggest. He already had the weapon and, according to the county prosecutor, he used it. Given the close quarters, I do not think it's all that unreasonable, though, to wonder whether some of the officers' wounds were the result of "friendly fire." Entirely possible.

Wow, a shooting happened at a police station, where there are guns and armed officers. The arrestee was surrounded by police with weapons but didn't care and grabbed for an officer's gun in spite of the fact that he would be shot and killed. The gun lovers say that the criminals never ever would attack where there are guns except in the cases when it does happen by someone with rage problems or mental problems or by someone who wants to commit suicide by cop. There was an armed guard at Columbine who actually shot at one of the teens, there were armed citizens right in the area where Gerald Loughner committed his crime. One of the people with a concealed gun nearly shot the wrong person. Fort Hood was not a gun free zone, Virginia Tech had its own police force and was not that far from the regular police force. Many are bashing the petite police officer and yet the gun nutters want teachers, some of whom are petite, to carry guns in schools. I'm no more off topic than the ranters who have spewed out their bilge so spare me your phoney outrage. I just wish the officers a speedy and complete recovery. Good union people who risk their lives and limbs every day.
