Haddonfield’s Summer Academy was chock full of classes that ranged from hands-on science experiments, jewelry making, cake decorating and Harry Potter-themed activities straight out of Hogwarts.

Coordinator Sean Sweeney said the academy enrolled a record number of students with 545 participants, an 80-percent increase from 2011 when he took over the summer program. The 2013 program started immediately after school ended in June and runs through mid-August.

Sweeney said the academy was opened to students in other communities with participants hailing from Haddon Heights, Haddon Township and Cherry Hill. They ranged in age from entering kindergarten to high school seniors.

All of the SAT prep class sections were filled, while video game programming, Lego robotics, iLearn on iPads and “make and take” science classes were also very popular, Sweeney said.  Additionally, the “get ready” programs were nearly full, which prepared students for grades they would be entering in September.

Sweeney hopes to enroll 600 students in the summer 2014.
