This Sunday, June 12th, 2011 at the Church of St. Isaac Jogues (3 Lord Place, Marleton, NJ), the world-renowned Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale, under the musical direction of South Jersey native Jeffrey R. Smith, will present "Messages" -- a powerful season finale concert featuring a program of classical, jazz, popular and spiritual music written by African American composers.
Accompanied by full orchestra, the choir will lead the audience on an exploration of African American music from secular ("I'll be there," Jackson Five) to sacred ("Lift Every Voice and Sing," Johnson) and from traditional ("Listen to the Lambs," Dett) to contemporary ("Messages," McFerrin/Treece). Highlights of the program include an oratorio from Adolphus Hailstork ("Done Made My Vow"), an original arrangement of Duke Ellington songs ("Ellington Medley") and the debut of a newly released Teddy Pendergrass song, "I Am Who I Am," which hit the airwaves earlier this spring on what would have been the soul legend’s 61st birthday.
Tickets are available online (https://store.phillyboyschoir.org/), by phone (215-222-3500) or at the door on the day of the show.
