New Driving School Opens in Haddonfield

StreetSafe Driving Academy uses off-duty police officers as trainers.

StreetSafe Driving Academy has a new location in Haddonfield for a push into South Jersey. It's located at 9 Tanner St.

The company offers a new take on training new drivers.

All driving instructors are off-duty police officers from around the state—the academy's founding members. The company partnered with Subaru of America for the new service. Clients will drive 2011 Subarus while learning how to drive. Subaru's national headquarters is in Cherry Hill.

"Subaru is proud to be the officials vehicle of StreetSafe Driving Academy," said Subaru of America, Inc. Senior Vice President of Sales Bill Cyphers. “With Subaru’s emphasis on safety, it is a natural fit for us to partner with StreetSafe in our shared mission of safe driving.”

State law mandates that teens must spend at least six hours time training behind the wheel, and experience practicing on highways, traffic circles, in construction zones and at night before they can obtain a driver's permit.

"StreetSafe partners with teens and their parents to ensure that they fully understand the risks associated with driving, the proven principles of Graduated Driver Licence (GDL) and the critical importance of developing skills—not just during the permit phase—but long after a teen is fully licensed," said Pam Fischer, chair of New Jersey's Teen Driver Study Commission.
