St. Paddy's Partiers: Sober Sam Will Drive You Home

This designated driver service is ready for one of its busiest days—St. Patrick's Day.

South Jersey’s first designated driver service is gearing up for one of the biggest days of the year for them—St. Patrick’s Day.

Sober Sam, based in Camden County, is a service that will not only drive home someone who’s had a few too many drinks, but will also drive their car home.

And, it's open to Haddonfield party-goers this weekend.

“If you’re at a bar having a drink, and you’re not okay to drive, you give us a call and two people will come,” said owner Jerry Adams. “One will drive you home in your car, the other will follow.”

Since 2009, Adams said business has been “nonstop—seven days a week.”

Their busiest days fall on New Year’s Eve, the day before Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayo and of course, St. Patrick’s Day.

The idea started when Adam’s now 21-year-old daughter—who works with her dad driving for Sober Sam—got her license. Adams also had a good friend who died as a result of a drunken driver.

Right now, there are 13 drivers for Sober Sam—including Adams himself and his daughter.

“We have a very dedicated crew,” Adams said. “They are in it to get people home and that’s what I look for when I hire people.”

And, Adams is seeing a lot of regular customers.

“Once you use us the first time, you see how simple and easy it is,” he said.

Adams doesn’t want you to confuse Sober Sam with a taxi service. His prices are competitive and often better, he said. Plus, your car gets home safely along with you, regardless of the time.

“We’ll take everybody home,” Adams said. “We won’t call it quits if people still need us. As long as they are in a safe place and can hang tight, we’ll eventually show up.”

Sober Sam services Camden County and parts of Burlington and Gloucester counties. On St. Patrick’s Day, they will start pickups at noon. You can make reservations but right now, none are being taken for after midnight on St. Paddy’s Day.

Adams wants to keep it on a first come-first serve basis.

Pricing on Saturday is $30 for the first three miles and $2 each additional mile.

Sober Sam is a year-round business and on occasions, will expand their services to Philadelphia. For more information, visit them here.
