VA Taps Bancroft to Assist Brain-Injured Vets

Bancroft picked to work on a pilot program.

Bancroft’s traumatic brain injury program has been approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide services for patients covered by VA benefits.

Veterans’ participation in the program, including residential services through Bancroft at Cherry Hill, Mullica Hill, Brick and Plainsboro, is a pilot program announced by the VA earlier this month.

“Veterans are in great need of these types of rehabilitation programs, which help people regain daily living skills and other functional abilities," said Dr. Cynthia Boyer, Bancroft's senior clinical director of brain injury programs. "Whether a veteran is injured in combat, or through an accident or illness even years later, Bancroft can now help vets get their lives back through these services."

After people who suffer traumatic brain injuries leave a hospital, they typically need to re-learn how to function at home and in their community, regain work skills and develop strategies to compensate for memory loss, thinking difficulties and other effects of their injury.

Bancroft programs are designed specifically to help clients adapt to returning to society, said Boyer.

No additional information about the program, including any potential increase in staffing needs or whether the new program is established in response to injuries to military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq, was available either from Bancroft or Veterans Administration representatives.

Bancroft’s rehabilitation options include residential and day treatment, vocational, in-home and outpatient programs. Services include cognitive rehabilitation, physical, occupational and speech therapies, and psychological counseling.

Founded in 1883, Bancroft is a leading service provider for people with neurological challenges. It has been providing service for clients suffering traumatic brain injuries for more than 20 years.
