What Was That Rumble in South Jersey Saturday Morning?

Demolition work at the old Eagle Point refinery in West Deptford could be heard for miles.

Explosions at the Eagle Point refinery complex in West Deptford could be felt through much of South Jersey Saturday morning, prompting more than a few emergency calls in towns in Gloucester and Camden Counties.

Demolitions experts were bringing down the fractionator at the complex—a massive tower used in the refining process—and a pair of other stacks in a controlled implosion.

The noise carried for miles—fire and police officials in Collingswood said they received multiple calls about possible explosions locally, but said the Eagle Point work was to blame.

Calls elsewhere, including Blackwood and Magnolia, were blamed on the demolition, as well.
