Attorney Michael Madden Receives Major Award

The Civil Trial Bar Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) will honor Michael P. Madden, Esquire, and the Honorable Helen E. Hoens, (former) Associate Justice, New Jersey Supreme Court, with its James J. McLaughlin Award on Thursday, February 20.  The 2014 McLaughlin Award Dinner will be held at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, beginning at 6 p.m.

The James J. McLaughlin Award is presented annually by the NJSBA’s Civil Trial Bar Section to an attorney or judge who is recognized for demonstrating civility, legal competence and professionalism in the practice of civil trial law.

Michael P. Madden was born in Camden, New Jersey, the fourth of six children. A star athlete at Camden Catholic High School in football and basketball,  he attended the College of William and Mary, where he was co-captain of the football team, coached by legendary NFL Hall of Fame coach, Marv Levy.  Mike went on to complete his legal education at Rutgers University School of Law - Camden.

Mike has been practicing law in New Jersey since 1972.   He began his professional career with the firm of Farrell, Eynon and Munyon in Haddonfield.  In 1977, Mike and his brother, Jim, founded Madden & Madden, P.A., where Mike now serves as President.  Throughout his extensive legal career, Mike has been engaged in the area of civil litigation involving all types of claims.

Mike has tried numerous cases in both the State and Federal Courts and has appeared before the Appellate Division and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, including en banc argument.  He is a member of the Bar of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.  He also has appeared before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights and the New Jersey Commissioner of Education.

Mike is the former prosecutor for the Borough of Collingswood and presently serves as the Solicitor for the Borough of Collingswood Planning Board.  In addition, Mike served as the Municipal Court Judge for the Borough of Lindenwold from 1979 to 1981 and the Borough of Pine Valley from 1979 to 1981.

Mike is a former member of the District IV Ethics Committee.  He also was a member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Committee on the Rules of Evidence from 2009 to 2013.  Mike has been a member of the Executive Committee of the NJSBA Civil Trial Bar Section since 1989, having served as Chairperson.

Mike teaches trial advocacy as an Adjunct Professor at his alma mater, Rutgers School of Law - Camden.  He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer by New Jersey monthly magazine and also has been rated AV Preeminent® by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory for many years.  As further indication of Mike’s reputation for civility, integrity and professionalism, he was named by his peers Professional Lawyer of the Year for Camden County in 2011. 

Mike resides in Haddonfield with his wife of over 45 years, Marjorie "Midge" Madden, Ph.D., a professor at Rowan University, and their beloved Labrador, Beauregard.  Mike and Midge are the proud parents of five children and grandparents of 12 wonderful grandchildren.
