5 Things You Need to Know

A budget briefing Wednesday at the Municipal Hall.

  1. Borough Commissioner Jeff Kasko will hold a municipal budget briefing 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Municipal Hall. The public is invited. The briefing will review revenue and expenditures and explain cuts to keep the borough from exceeding a state-imposed 2 percent budget increase cap. The $13.9 million spending and tax levy plan includes several key cuts, including reduction in hours for the information center, reduced labor for leaf collection, elimination of the summer recreation program and a reduction in an art program for seniors at the Mabel Kay Senior Center.
  2. The borough commissioners are reminding residents who conduct yard sales to adhere to local regulations that prohibit signs anywhere except the front lawn of the sale. A permit for the sale is also required. The permit will be $2 before May 10 and $5 afterward. There is a $10 fine for not having a permit before a sale is held.
  3. The borough is on the way to installing parking kiosks to replace parking meters in 555 of the town’s 972 pay parking spaces.  The commercial strips along Kings Highway and Haddon Avenue will remain on a meter system, for the initial rollout. All of the borough lots and the commercial district on Tanner Street will use the kiosk system. Tanner street will be a test for the remainder of the commercial district. Officials said the kiosk system generates more revenue, largely because motorist won’t be able to use time on unexpired meters. It also saves time and labor by not having to collect coins. One downside of removing meters is a 12-minute grace period shoppers now get by pressing a button on the meters. Officials are still narrowing down the companies that will provide and install the system.
  4. The parking kiosk rollout is part of a $520,000 capital bond the commissioners approved on first reading on April 26.  The bond will also pay for various road improvements and equipment for public works.
  5. The commissioners have also introduced a measure to increase fees for various services, some by as much as 10 times what they previously were. Some of the increases include initial fees for permits for sidewalk repair increasing from $2 to $25. For a complete list of the increases please go here.
