Coffee Shop Discussion About Islam Tonight

Jersey Java & Tea, 140 N. Haddon Ave., will host the event.

The borough Human Relations Commission is sponsoring Islam Explained, a coffee-shop chat tonight to explore the challenges of religious diversity.  The event will be held at Jersey Java and Tea, 140 N. Haddon Ave., from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Zahida Rahman, who along with her late husband, Zia Rahman, was instrumental in the establishment of a mosque in Voorhees.

“The road to building this mosque was chronicled in a documentary film, Talking Through Walls,” according to a commission news release. “Mrs. Rahman continues to promote understanding between people in diverse communities. She will present an informational session on Islam and the mosque, followed by a question and answer session.”

Borough Commissioner Jeff Kasko, a member of the Human Relations Commission, said the event is educational.

“She speaks to a lot of groups about the myths and misunderstandings of Islam,” Kasko said of Rahman. “She explains common misperceptions that people have about the Muslim religion. In Haddonfield, we have a population that’s well educated and curious about world events and this is an opportunity for people to learn more about something that’s current.”
