It's Not Easy Being Green, but It Can Help the Environment

The Haddonfield Green Team will host a composing workshop on Sept. 27 at the Grace Church Parrish Hall.

It will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and cost $20.

Sustainability is one of the missions of the borough-sponsored group and composting, or finding ways to decompose natural elements in a healthy way, reduces waste and improves soil.

Melisa Skyrm, founder of Food for the Soil, will discuss what materials to compost, provide answers to common questions, and teach problem-solving techniques for three different composting methods, according to a borough news release.

Other features of the program include:

• Learning about the new fly and odor-free Japanese Bokashi technique

•  Find out how to compost dog waste in a food waste digester

•  Compost that night! (bring a fresh sample of an item you have a question about and compost it in one of our methods)

• Composters, food waste digesters and bokashi units will be available to purchase at the workshop

•  Enter the drawing for a free Bokashi system

• The fee can be applied to the purchase of a composter or food waste digester. The bokashi system—made locally of re-purposed items—will be available to participants for $15, a 50-percent discount.

Haddonfield was awarded bronze-level certification as a sustainable  community under the Sustainable Jersey program in September 2010. Now Haddonfield is currently working on raising the borough's level of certification from bronze to silver by 2013 and are seeking input from the community.

The Haddonfield Green Team encourages sustainable use of our community's natural, human and economic resources through education, outreach, and collaborative partnerships between residents, community organizations, borough government and neighboring towns.

The Environmental Commission is an advisory body to the Planning Board and borough commissioners on matters affecting Haddonfield's natural and built environment.
