While some Haddonfield businesses thrived despite the poor economy, other owners found themselves sinking. Such was the unfortunate case for Mahmaud Houshiarnejad, who ran Houshiarnejad's Collection, a Persian rug shop on Kings Highway. “I don't have a stomach for what to do next,” he said at the time. Not that it slowed the teen down—he’s already back on the lacrosse field, determined that nothing will keep him from his beloved sports. Whether Brandywine Senior Living should be allowed to expand its Warwick Road facility dominated meetings, and the news, for much of the past few months. Readers connected with this story about the planning board’s OK, but the matter was far from over then—and it’s still not. 5. Car Plows Into Kress Liquor Store on Haddonfield-Berlin Road

What could have quickly turned into a tragedy was confined to just property damage after a woman drove through the front window of Kress Wine, on the Haddonfield border. While the store was open at the time and there were children in the car, everyone walked away unscathed. Originally published Sept. 4

3. Commissioners Agree to Spend $354K to Install Artificial Turf on Athletic Field

After years of complaints about Haddonfield’s subpar grass fields, commissioners agreed to throw in cash for turf fields in town, adding to money raised by a private group and promised by the school board. Opponents raised financial and safety concerns throughout the process. The turf fields were included in the upcoming referendum on the Bancroft purchase, but the school board decided to yank the measure after private fundraising outpaced expectations. There were also concerns that voters who generally support the referendum don’t support the field project. Originally published Nov. 26

2. Don't Call Brian Zoubek a Cream Puff

The big man, a standout championship Duke basketball player, returned to Haddonfield this year to open his first business. The Haddon Avenue shop churns out the pastry confections, filled as you wait. “I'm just a fat kid, at heart,” he told Patch. Originally published May 29

Police news doesn’t come any more adorable than this. After a group of ducklings met with trouble in a drain, Haddonfield’s finest came to the rescue. They did take a quick moment out to draw straws on who would have to climb down the drain. Originally published July 7
