Pen a Letter to Lizzy Haddon for Tricentennial Celebration

From the Haddonfield Tricentennial Committee:

Beloved children’s author DyAnne DiSalvo is writing a children’s book about Elizabeth Haddon, in conjunction with the Haddonfield Tricentennial Committee. The book will include elements created by local school children. As a result, The Haddonfield Tricentennial Committee is sponsoring a “Letters to Lizzy” (Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh) Contest open to all elementary students (grades K – 5) attending public and private schools in Haddonfield.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage elementary students to think critically about Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh’s legacy in the town and what has changed or stayed the same in 300 years.

The essay theme is “Letters to Lizzy.” Students should write their essays as a letter to Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh.

Rules:

1) The letter must be less than 200 words and must be typed double spaced on white 8.5- by-11-inch paper and mailed; or, typed and emailed to Maureen@haddonfield300.org with the subject line: Letters to Lizzy.

2) The name, address, home phone number, email address, school, grade and age of student author must be submitted on a cover page, accompanying the essay.

3) All letters will be judged on the author’s knowledge of Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh, originality of ideas, development of point of view, insight into the essay theme, clarity of expression, organization and grammar.

4) All letters should begin “Dear Lizzy” and end with the author’s first name and age.

5) All letters submitted become the property of the Tricententennial Committee and may be displayed on Web pages and in local publications. Winning essays will be printed in a children’s book about Elizabeth Haddon’s travels to the new world and her desire to create a community in Haddonfield.

6) A grade-specific rubric (evaluation tool) will be used to assess each essay. That way, all student work will be assessed in respect to their age/skill level.

7) A variety of letters will be chosen for publication in the book. As many as 20 letters may be chosen depending on length. Excerpts of some letters may be used due to space constraints.

Submitted letters will not be returned.

Prizes: First prize: $50, second prize: $25, third prize: $10. In addition, all selected letter authors will join a book-signing event with DyAnne DiSalvo and awards will be presented to the winners at the Markeim Arts center in a special presentation on Aug. 18, 2013.

Deadline: All essays must be postmarked by Friday, May 3, 2013, and mailed to:
