14 Year Old Girl Scout Writes Book on Heroines of Haddonfield--Celebrating 300 Years of “HERSTORY”

She may only be 14 but this Haddonfield, NJ millennial has an appreciation for the women who came 300 years before her. Christie Castorino penned Heroines of Haddonfield, the first children's book featuring Quaker Elizabeth Haddon, who at 21, left her home in England and founded Haddonfield in 1701. In an easy-to-read format, Castorino provides mini biographies on 14 women who contributed to Haddonfield, the country and the world.

Did you ever wonder who invented the Green Bean Casserole? Why is the setting for the Halloween movie series is set in a town called Haddonfield? Or what Olympian can be seen running down historic King's Highway? Written with young readers in mind, Castorino selected women from the historic borough who captured her interest; she hopes to have the book become part of the curriculum in classrooms during Women's History Month.

Come meet the author. Castorino will be at the Book Swap, 134 Kings Highway East, Haddonfield, for a book signing on Saturday, June 1, 2013, from noon to 3 p.m.

Illustrations for the book were created by Jennifer Cossaboon, a 2008 graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School. Cossaboon created illustrations that capture the stories associated with each woman featured.

The catalyst for Castorino to write the book was to earn her Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Plus, the book is the perfect addition to the town-wide celebration of Haddonfield's Tricentennial. Castorino is an 8th grade student at Haddonfield Middle School.
