Haddonfield's Tricentennial Comes to Your Front Door

Organizers are asking all residents for a family photograph in front of their home.

The Haddonfield Tricentennial Committee and Haddonfield Civic Association has extended a deadline for borough residents to submit a photograph of their families in front of their homes this holiday season, with the family in the foreground and the home in the background, to memorialize life in Haddonfield in 2013.

The deadline has been extended to Jan. 15 to submit photos.

Digital and printed photographs will be collected for publication in a town-wide photo album, which will be donated to the Historical Society of Haddonfield’s archives for future generations to view and enjoy. The project is one of the final activities to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the settlement of Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh in 1713.

"We want to capture the people and places that made Haddonfield what it is in 2013, and preserve this snapshot of time for future generations," explained Maureen Eyles, Executive Director of Haddonfield’s Tricentennial. "Along with the photo, we want to record the address of the home and the names of everyone in the photo." For that reason, digital submissions should be titled by street name and house number, and specific instructions for submitting digital images can be found on the Haddonfield Tricentennial website. There are 4,600 households in Haddonfield, plus businesses, churches, apartments – we have a lofty goal to photograph everyone."

The Photo Legacy Project will begin on Thanksgiving Day and conclude December 15. Because photographs taken with cell phones are typically low-resolution, residents are asked to use a camera rather than a cell phone. The goal is for the photograph to be primarily of the people, with the house at a distance in the background.  Assemble the people to be photographed closer to the sidewalk than to the house and locate the photographer about 4 to 6 feet in front of the subjects.

The Haddonfield Civic Association will organize block captains to photograph neighborhoods on specific dates. Block captains will set an appointment to take their neighbors’ photo, will show the family the photo for their approval, and will submit the approved photo to the collection. Other volunteers from the Civic Association will retrieve and catalog all of the submitted photos, checking off households as they come in.

To volunteer to be a block captain, contact Maureen Eyles at 856-795-9927 or Maureen@haddonevents.com.  Block captains with a photography hobby and access to a good camera are requested.

"We can also accept photographs taken by professional photographers as long as they are not copyright protected and have no watermark.  Digitally retouched photos can be accepted, so feel free to fix any red-eye and look your best for this piece of history.  And don’t forget to include your pets in the photo!" Eyles said.
