Area police are warning South Jersey residents of a phone scam involving callers posing as members of police associations.

Callers using the phone number 856-396-9549 have alternately identified themselves as the N.J. Police Foundation, Camden County F.O.P. or Camden County Metro F.O.P.

Police say the scammers claim to be soliciting donations for the purchase of body armor for law enforcement, and stress that there is no such organization as the “N.J. Police Foundation.”

Anyone who has given money to the callers should file a report with his or her local police department.

The scam was first reported by the Voorhees Police Department, which stresses that the callers may have branched out into other municipalities.
