Haddon Twp. Man Sentenced for White Supremacist Hate Crime

Kyle Powell and two accomplices targeted Middle Eastern men in a New Year's Eve 2011 attack.

A reputed white supremacist from Haddon Township will spend 15 months behind bars for a hate crime attack carried out in the name of the “Aryan Terror Brigade.”

Kyle Powell, 24, of the West Collingswood extension section of Haddon Township, pleaded guilty conspiracy to commit a hate crime assault, and was sentenced Wednesday to prison.

Powell and two accomplices—Michal Gunar, 29, of East Windsor, and Christopher Ising, 31, of Waretown—celebrated New Year’s Eve 2011 at a white supremacist “meet and greet” in East Brunswick, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said.

Powell, Gunar and Ising took their hate on the road by driving to an apartment complex in Sayreville “with the express purpose of assaulting random, non-Caucasian individuals,” Fishman said.

Gunar, brandishing a knife, attacked two Middle Eastern men and shouted anti-Arab slurs at them. He admitted to pulling one of the victims from a car and punching him repeatedly.

Gunar later posted a picture of blood-soiled pants on a social media site, as well as posting incriminating evidence about his role in the assault, according to the indictment against him.

Gunar received the longer prison term, 33 months in prison, for conspiracy to commit a hate crime assault and the actual commission of a hate crime assault. Powell and Gunar were each additionally sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Ising, believed to be a member of the white supremacist group “Atlantic City Skins,” also pleaded guilty in the case and will be sentenced Friday.

Powell has already done a stint in state prison, according to state records. He was imprisoned for three years, 2006-2009, for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

The Aryan Terror Brigade is active in 20 states, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which classifies it as an "active racist skinhead group." The center says the group is found in four New Jersey towns—East Windsor, Woodbridge, Wildwood and Flemington.
