Two Dead Following Tuesday Morning Crash on Route 55

The driver and one other person were pronounced dead following a single-car crash. Four others are in critical condition.

Two people are dead and four others are in critical condition following a one-car crash on Route 55 Tuesday morning, according to New Jersey State Police.

Troopers from the Bellmawr Station responded to milepost 40 for the crash at 6:12 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Chevrolet van was traveling in the northbound lane of State Highway 55. 

For reasons that are still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off of the roadway to the right and struck a tree. 

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining injured were flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where a second person was later pronounced dead.

Only the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The driver was one of the fatalities, and remains unidentified pending next of kin notification.

Norma Santiago, 47, was also pronounced dead.

Those in critical condition are: Carlos Gonzalez, 31, of Bridgeton; Regina Fortoso, 25;  Jose Santiago, 37, of Bridgeton; and Angel Rodriguez, 48, of Vineland.

The accident remains under investigation.
