Crowd Turns Out for Women's History Month Commemoration

Borough commissioners honor local women and girls.

It was a big night at the borough Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday.

A crowd of about 150 turned out, which is about 145 more people than usually show up at the bimonthly regular meetings.

It was the annual recognition of nearly 50 achievements of the women and girls of Haddonfield for Women’s History Month.

“This is one of our biggest nights,” said Mayor Tish Colombi, surveying the crowd before the meeting.

The commissioners breezed through the approval of 14 resolutions before starting to hand out a stack of official proclamations.

Levato Thomas, 86, a retired school nurse eagerly perused the agenda before the meeting. She volunteered that she’s not a regular at commissioner’s meetings.

“I got a note from my women’s group at church to come,” she said. “I’m old. I lived through World War II. I’ve got a lot of history.”

A proclamation from the borough told the story:

“Women’s History Month provides our country the privilege of honoring the countless contributions that American women have made throughout our history. Women also have fundamentally shaped our civilization in the care and nurturing of families. Today women are furthering the Founder’s vision by working to advance freedom, increase equality, and administer justice in every corner of our land, through everyday work in schoolrooms, boardrooms, courtrooms, homes and communities.”
