The Haddonfield Board of Commissioners are expected to vote tonight on a resolution to spend $354,000 as part of a $1 million project to install artificial turf on two fields at . The money will be contingent on $500,000 in private funds raised by a community group for the project.

The borough board of education has already approved $150,000 toward the project, which will resurface turf at the high school football stadium and the adjacent Anniversary Field. The borough owns Anniversary Field.

from Joe Del Duca, of the Turf Field Committee, a group of residents who have raised $250,000 toward the effort, so far. Del Duca told commissioners he needed an immediate endorsement of his effort to continue aggressive fundraising.

Let's be clear: The total cost to Haddonfield taxpayers for this project is over one-half million dollars -- and not just $356,000. The $356,000 does not include the $150,000 referenced as being kicked in by the School Board, nor does it include any likely cost overruns. It's conceivable, when all is said and done, that this project could cost Haddonfield taxpayers well above $500,000. Does Haddonfield truly have this money at a time that the same potholes have remained unfilled for months, if not years? And who buys the argument that this is necessary for our sports programs? Haddonfield's sports programs have never been stronger than in recent years, without this pet project that for some reason must be rushed through without adequate public debate.

Why don't we pave the streets with the artificial turf? What a waste of money! What are we teaching our children? In a near depression economy let's continue to spend recklessly...we can always raise taxes or get another credit card.

In the patch article last week concerning the artificial turf, safety issues for our athletes was the reason for this huge investment. There was a survey posted by Dan showing a huge reduction in every type of sports injury when played on artificial turf. That survey was taken from the website of the Tarkett Sports Company, who make artificial turf. The NCAA had a survey done by the American Journal of Sports Medicine on April 30, 2012 that stated there was a 40% INCREASE in lower body injuries on artificial turf. The NFL did a similar survey in 2010 showing a higher rate also, showing an increase by 1.79 to 1.40. Artificial turf has better traction and improves performance but that traction is what "sticks" in competition and causes severe ACL, MCL and PCL ligament damage. At best, injuries are comparable and not lowered by artificial turf. In reading many comments about the need for this purchase, they come from the fact that some people are embarrassed by the look of the field. The majority of people in the town are not in favor of this kind of spending yet only a small handful of them showed up at meeting last night. There are bigger issues being proposed that will throw this town into debt so massive it will change Haddonfield forever. It's time for us to get off our rear ends and start paying attention to what's going on. The future of our town is everyone's responsibility.
