Haddonfield Walk to School Week Starts Monday

Exercise starts when kids walk out the door.

If borough officials get their wish, Haddonfield’s streets will be crawling with kids next week.

Borough commissioners have proclaimed the week of Oct. 3 as “Walk to School Week.”

The designation, aimed at promoting pedestrian safety, cutting back on traffic congestion, and urging children to get more exercise, also encourages residents to point out pedestrian pitfalls to the town.

Driving students to school by private vehicle contributes to traffic congestion and air pollution and compounds the threat of obesity, the proclamation states.

Commissioner Jeffrey Kasko urged families to participate in the “walking school bus” program, in which adults supervise children as they walk to school. “It’s almost like a car pool. You can share the duty with other parents,” he said.
