Poll: Romney Picks Paul Ryan as Running Mate—Your Thoughts?

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan will run for vice president on the GOP ticket. Is he the right choice?

The team of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will take on Barack Obama and Joe Biden in November.

Romney and Ryan, a Wisconson Republican congressman, teamed up in Norfolk, VA, this morning to make the official announcement, although details leaked out hours before.

Ryan is considered a rising star in the GOP and is best known for his proposed budget that calls for an overhaul of Medicare.

Some analysists call Ryan a "bold choice" because the congressman's selection is considered a controversial move and a departure from the "safe" reputation Romney has. Ryan has a long voting history on issues that Democrats want to run on — health care and Social Security, especially.

Ryan also has never run for a statewide ticket, according to ABC News.

Politicos have been salivating for weeks over Romney's running mate choice. The many names thrown around included Gov. Chris Christie, that he was interested in running.

What do you think? Did Mitt Romney make the right decision? Does Paul Ryan running as VP change your vote one way or the other? Are you bummed Christie wasn't selected after all?

Vote in our poll and tell us in the comments.

Gene, your response to my post was not responsive and just partisan rambling. I thought I could engage you in a meaningful discussion. Be well.
Monk August 20, 2012 at 11:41 AM
What is it with the Left's fixation on "teabagging"? Their familiarity with the activity, and tendency to introduce it into every discussion is certainly curious.

To MONK... Just wishful thinking I guess!
Monk August 20, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Yeah, every time a Lefty brings up "teabagging", it seems like some weird form of solicitation. Isn't that against Patch policy?

Obama has instigated police state tactics against Americans, Frank Rizzo. That is not my opinion, that is a fact. Is it possible for you to make a statement of fact instead of engaging in personal attacks? It appears that people of your kind, can't seem to cite authoritive sources to back up your claims. As far as my Constitutional Rights go -- Obama has done virtually NOTHING to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Thanks to his administration: * Returning veterans, and people who quote the Founding Fathers are labled as "terrorists" according to the Dept. of Homeland Security. (Janet Napolitano said she stood by an April 2009 DHS intelligence assessment that listed returning vets as likely domestic terrorists. See: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/16/napolitano-stands-rightwing-extremism/) * Empowered the Department of Homeland Security to buy 1 BILLLION (that's right one billion) rounds of .40 hollow point hand gun ammunition to be used against AMERICANS. This ammo is BANNED by the Geneva Convention. (See http://www.naturalnews.com/036847_ammo_purchases_government_stockpiling_media_lies.html) RE: "Frank Rizzo 11:32 pm on Sunday, August 19, 2012 proud you are the typical teabagger whining about your constitutional rights being taken away and as soon as the facts start making you look foolish you want to remove people's right to free speech. the hypocrisy among republicans is a guarantee"

More examples of Obama's trampling on the United States Constitution: * Obama “signed into law: H.R. 347, the ‘Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011,’ The law makes speaking out against an elected or appointed member of the federal government a crime (see: http://www.wnd.com/2012/03/obama-signs-end-to-free-speech/) * Trying to use the illegal "Fast and Furious" gun running operation to demonize the Second Amendment -- resutling in Obama's Attorney General Holder held in contempt of Congress over the illegal "Fast and Furious" gun-running program which resulted in the murder of American federal agents and hundreds of Mexican citizens. (See: http://article.wn.com/view/2012/07/31/ATF_and_US_Attorneys_at_fault_in_Fast_Furious_scandal/) * Rolling out unconstitutional checkpoints on highways and rails -- run by the military and Homeland Security. Obama is encouraging the illegal search of American citizens without establishing "probable cause" for the search (see: https://www.checkpointusa.org/blog/index.php/2011/03/01/p240) ...I can go on -- but you cannot refute any of the threats to liberty that are being perpetrated against Americans with the full blessing of Obama.

The wealthy 1% must share the sacrifice. No more tax breaks for Exxon execs and hedge-fund honchos who pay lower rates than we do. Campaign contributions to RomRyan shouldn't outweigh fairness for all.
Martin August 20, 2012 at 01:34 PM
Goldwater and Reagan are rolling over in their graves because today's Repubs think they were too "liberal." Ryan's kill-Medicare, coddle-the-rich ideas have gone too far for most Americans.
Concerned August 20, 2012 at 01:57 PM
Martin. If you have children or grand children or nieces and nephews you must understand that our current entitlements must be reformed in a sensible manner. Our debt level as % of GDP, including state and local debt and all govt unfunded pension obligations is 175%! Calculated the same way the UK and Germany are at 95 % approx. and Greece is 165%. What Romney and Ryan are saying is we have to stop spending at the current levels or we will lose our nation's ability to borrow, compete, maintain an adequate military, pay our debts including entitlements. This is serious and everyone has to really think through this mess we are in economically. Once the debt levels are brought down, the economy growing, then tax increases can be levied to bring in revenues. We cannot fix this problem with taxes as the economic recovery is not stable at this time. We need leadership and certainty out of Washington. Have we become a nation that is so partisan we will blindly destroy our children's future? Gosh I hope not.

I would ask Romney supporters to google "damon corporation". It seems mister "we need to reform medicare" did quite well bilking the system. After that, google "todd akin paul ryan rape" and you will see what the presumptive #2 on the republican ticket thinks about redefining rape and what women can and cannot do with their bodies in ryanland.
O bummer August 20, 2012 at 02:03 PM
The 1 percent already does their share. Unlike 50 percent they pay the majority of taxes, consume the majority of goods and services which provide jobs and its just never enough for you tax and spend Democraps. Your cheesy soundbite shows your ignorance of how the economy works. 70 percent of gdp is consumer spending in order for the economy to grow we need spending. Raising taxes doesn't create jobs or even lower the debt. It will lower spending though. 1.3 trillion annual o bummer deficits and all liberals can say is its not fair. Darn right its not fair o bummer has screwed generations of kids because he wants to destroy our country with spending we just can't afford.

Joe R August 20, 2012 at 02:39 PM
Thanks for all the right wing Fox News blather and talking points. This nonsense about the 50% who don't pay taxes. Garbage. They pay wage taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes, gas taxes, if they own a small shack they pay property taxes, if they rent they indirectly pay property taxes through the rent. If they pay very low or no federal income taxes (they may be paying some state taxes), it's because middle class wages have been stagnate for ages, if they are the working poor, they are being ripped off by the top one percent. What a terrible commentary on this country that so many hard working Americans are being reduced to peons and serfs by greedy CEOs who won't share in all the profits and wealth. The top 1% could not have gotten so rich without the workers who they underpay. By the way, that 50% figure who supposedly don't pay any federal income taxes also includes the poor retired seniors who basically live on their Social Security check, or poor impoverished seniors in nursing homes who have exhausted all their savings, Medicaid pays for their nursing home. Why does the GOP hate poor people so much? Why does the GOP hate the elderly and the disabled so much? Why does the GOP hate those poor and homeless kids so much? Oh yeah, the GOP and libertarians think that all poor people are lazy moochers. That will come as a shock to the poor person working 3 part time jobs and still doesn't make enough to pay a federal income taxes.

Archie O' bunker.... Did you go to the same school and have the same teachers as Akin? That would explain where you get your obfuscation of the real facts. Is your nickname TART?
Gene August 21, 2012 at 02:16 AM
Concerned.... Where do you get your voodoo math numbers from? The current Debt to GDP ratio is 101% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_debt During Eisenhower's term it was 127%. He then created a stimulus by building bridges, roads, sewer systems, and water treatment systems. What is your hollow Republican point? When Obama wants to do the same thing, every politically greedy Republican votes against the American worker. Change the channel. Your name should be O'CONCERNED. Obama - Biden 2012
Gene August 21, 2012 at 02:38 AM
John Jay.... Right wing sites that try to confuse the true meaning of what really took place? Your whole party is a bad joke. You can't do any better than that? No facts, vote No on every jobs bill, No good ideas, No respect for women(even if they are raped), No trickle down benefit ever, No taxes paid on money in the Caymans, No equal pay for women on equal work, No good candidates running, No middle class jobs because they were outsourced by vulture capitalists like Romney, No compassion for others because you believe in Ayn Rand's warped vision. I too can go on and on- Threats to liberty? Like I said , you tea baggers are a bad joke.
Concerned August 21, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Gene The 101% you refer to is only national debt. My 175% includes state and local debt and unfunded pension liabilities of all govt employees. This is how it is calculated in europe so its an apple to apple comparison. 175% debt to GDP is simply unsustainable. wake up please.
Gene August 21, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Concerned.... Apples to Apples? Plee.......assssse! We are talking national debt. Every state is different and by the way, the last time I looked,Europe doesn't have states. You should change your screen name to Confused
Concerned August 21, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Gene, You are kidding I hope. European countries do not have states as we do, but they have localities and cities etc that incur debt and that debt, including unfunded pension obligations are included in their calculation of % of debt to GDP. To not consider the debt, we as Americans shoulder at the state and local level, is stupidity or naive at best. Yes 175% is our total debt load as a % of our GDP. It is unsustainable and will ruin our country if it is allowed to continue. I am not confused but I am concerned about your lack of knowledge on important issues. This is an important election and we all as Americans need to spend quality time studying the facts on issues especially the economy. I promise not to get my facts from the republican handlers and you promise not to get your facts fro the democratic handlers. Deal? Read from a variety of sources and remain open minded so the facts can help you determine what is best for our country and future generations. Stop thinking political party.

RE: RP -- I live within my means. I have a modest home -- and pay unbearable school taxes for it for one child. Meanwhile, a 100% low-income development went up. A person with 3 children moves in and they pay 0 property taxes. Please explain to me why I should be punished for living within my means and can afford a home mortgage -- but my school taxes go to support someone living in an apartment with 3 kids and pays nothing. Joe R August 21, 2012 at 02:04 PM
JJ, so you hate renters? You regard renters as second class citizens? Renters indirectly pay taxes through their rent. What about the home owner without kids, what about the homeowner whose kids are grown and he no longer has any children in the public schools? If you think renting an apartment is such a knock, such an easy way out, why don't you sell your house and rent? Having well funded public schools is a positive force for any community or town. Like all right wingers, you seem to have a problem with poorer people who don't pay as much taxes as you, who may have more kids than you. Do you want to bar them from public schools? Only home owners' kids are allowed to use the public schools and renters children can just rot in hell?
John Jay August 21, 2012 at 02:18 PM
Nice personal attacks, Joe R (Re; Joe R's comment "JJ, so you hate renters? You regard renters as second class citizens?"). I am not going to take your bait regarding personal attacks. I am pointing out that funding public schools on the backs of property owners is entirely unfair. If you want to engage in a meaningful discussion of the 100% inequity regarding New Jersey's flawed school funding "system", please do so.
