Democratic candidate Cory Book and Republican candidate Steve Lonegan will debate on the Glassboro campus Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., the University announced Thursday evening.
NBC10 Anchor Jim Rosenfield will moderate the debate, along with a panel that includes NBC 4 New York anchor David Ushery and Philadelphia Inquirer Washington Correspondent Jonathan Tamari.
“I believe the candidates accepted the invitation to come to South Jersey in part because of the strong proposal we put forth with NBC and the Philadelphia Inquirer,” Rowan University President Dr. Ali Houshmand said in a prepared statement. “The location also shows their commitment to South Jersey and how they value the opinions of those who live and work here.”
Booker and Lonegan are competing for the seat left vacant this summer with the death of Frank Lautenberg. Each won their respective party’s special primary. The special election to fill the seat takes place one week after the debate, on Oct. 16.
The debate will be broadcast on NBC10 Philadelphia / WCAU, NBC 4 New York / WNBC, the Comcast Network and Telemundo Philadelphia / WWSI. It will also be available on Xfinity On Demand and rebroadcast on Telemundo Nueva York / WNJU on a date to be determined, according to the University.
Viewers will have the chance to submit questions to the panelists and participate in a discussion prior to the debate, according to the University.
A limited number of tickets will be made available for the debate by Rowan a week before the event.
Guests can submit questions as they enter the auditorium the night of the debate. The candidates will also debate Oct. 4 in Trenton, according to nj.com.
