BOE Votes to Move School Elections to November

Officials say the move will save money.

The on Thursday voted to move the annual school election from April to November.

The vote came during a regular meeting at . The measure will also eliminate a budget referendum in April.

Board President Steve Weinstein said the move will save about $20,000 by holding school elections during general elections in November. Board member Andrew Berlin, who filled the vacated seat of Marsha Marshall would have been up for election in April. He will now run in November.

Nominating petitions for board candidates will be due the day of the June primary election. The annual board reorganization will be held the first week of January and current member terms will be extended to January.

The board will still hold public hearings on its budget in April after it is approved at the county level. The budget will go into effect July 1 and anything in excess of the 2% cap will be voted on as a separate question in November.

When the budget is not within the 2% cap, the board will adopt a temporary budget until the November vote so it will have the authority “to pay people and spend money,” Weinstein said.
