'Dawgs Dominate Cinnaminson, Look to Championship

Haddonfield rolls over Cinnaminson to set up rematch with rival West Deptford for the South Jersey Group 2 crown.

Ten down, two to go.

The football team improved to 10-0 on Friday night in the South Jersey Group II Semifinals, taking down Cinnaminson 43-0. The Bulldawgs used the usual combination of a dominating defense and explosive offense in the win.

“We try and come out fast every week,” senior fullback and linebacker Robert Perkins said. “Tonight we did it and we executed. We come in and we work hard everyday, and it’s Friday and it’s payday.”

The Bulldawgs overcame some sloppy play on their first drive, with penalties forcing them to back-to-back first-and-20 situations. Following a Haddonfield timeout, senior wideout Matt Bhaya caught a 12-yard pass, senior running back Chris Dengler carried for 10 yards and quarterback Dan Ciemniecki ran 23 yards for the touchdown.

“(Coach) just came out and told us to take a deep breath,” Ciemniecki said. “He told us that it was just another game, and to not treat it differently. I think we smoothed it out and we played pretty well from then on.”

Byaha bolstered the score on a 9-yard touchdown run on the next drive after he stiff-armed a would-be tackler and spun away, drawing a chorus of “ooooh” from the crowd.

The defense also was stout on the night, forcing five turnovers on the night. The shutout was the fifth of the season for the Bulldawgs.

“The coaches put together a great scouting report,” said Ciemneicki, who had two interceptions to go along with a passing touchdown and a running score. “I just try to do what they tell me to do.”

The Bulldawgs did, however, see one impressive streak come to an end this night. A field goal by Matt Bhaya in the third quarter ended a streak of 17 straight touchdown drives by the first team offense.

“We’re playing well right now,” said head coach Frank DeLano with a smile when asked about the streak.

For the seniors, it was the last game they would play on Haddonfield’s grass.

“I’m leaving a lot behind,” said Perkins, who had a touchdown run and an interception.

“It’s pretty weird,” added Ciemneicki. “I grew up here, came here watching my brothers. Every fall it seems like I’m here 24/7. For this to be the last game here, it’s kind of emotional.”

With the win, the Bulldawgs will take on rival West Deptford in the South Jersey Group II final in a rematch of . It is becoming an almost yearly tradition for these conference foes to play each other twice a year. The once already this season, a 31-21 win back on Sept. 30.

“It’s obviously one of those things where we set goals,” said DeLano about getting back to the finals. “In my opinion, it takes a lot of courage to make goals. Bottom line, the kids have done everything to make that happen.”

“Once you get to the championship, you kind of don’t want to leave,” added Ciemneicki.

The Bulldawgs will travel to Haddon Heights for their annual Thanksgiving game on Thursday before taking on West Deptford on Dec. 3 at Rowan University for the South Jersey Group II crown.
