Indoor Track Leads the Way: Haddonfield Sports Week

The indoor track team brought back a host of medals from the sectional championship.

It was an action-packed week of sports at Haddonfield Memorial High School as the winter season heads down the stretch. The boys and girls swimming teams each advanced to the Group 1 semifinals, while several local runners found success at the indoor track sectionals. Also last week, the boys and girls basketball teams each found out their playoff seeds.

SWIMMING

The boys and girls swim teams each took the first step towards winning a South Jersey title last week. The boys opened up the Group B playoffs with a 106-64 win over Jackson Liberty. Today, the Bulldawgs host No. 3 Mainland, which opened with a 117-53 victory over Central Regional. The winner will advance to Wednesday’s final, which will be held at GCIT.

The female Bulldawgs also cruised in their quarterfinal matchup, defeating Central Regional, 112-58. Haddonfield will take on Ocean City today at 3:15. Ocean City advanced to the semifinals with a 99-71 win over Oakcrest. The girls final will also be held at GCIT on Wednesday.

Emily Carson had a big performance at the NJSIAA Sectional Championships, winning the 55-meter dash in 7.23 seconds. Carson wasn’t done there, though. She took fourth in the 55-meter hurdles and the 400. Teammate Olivia Blaber also fared well in multiple events, taking second in the 800 and second in the 55-meter hurdles. Meghan Malloy and Shelby Cain picked up right where they left off from the fall cross country season. Malloy won the 1600 and took second in the 3200, while Cain won the 3200 and took second in the 1600. Mary Claire had the top field performance, taking fifth in the pole vault.

John Greenberg had the top finish for the Haddonfield boys team, taking second in the 3200. Teammate Patrick Shea was fifth in the event. Other top five finishers included Alex Gigliotti (third, 1600), Alex Johnston (fourth, 55-meter hurdles), Luke Pease (fourth, pole vault), Ian Pickling (fifth, Pole vault), Rob Keegan (fourth, 55 dash) and Sam Ottenberg (fourth, 800).

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Bulldawgs continued their winning ways, going 3-0 last week. Haddonfield opened with a 79-33 victory against Overbrook. Nick Depersia had the hot hand from the outside, connecting on four treys and finishing with 20 points. Chris Biddle added 18 points. Biddle and DePersia kept it going in the Bulldawgs’ 61-35 victory over Collingswood, combining for 36 points.

On Saturday, Billy Griffin led the Bulldawgs with 13 points in Haddonfield’s 53-45 win over Pitman. Robby Depersia added 12 points.

Haddonfield also found out that it will be the No. 1 seed in the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs. The Bulldawgs will host Collingswood Monday, Feb. 26.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Bulldawgs went 1-2 last week, with their victory coming in dominant fashion. Haddonfield’s defense shut down Overbrook in a 48-8 win. Gina Graf had one her best games of the season, scoring a team-high 11 points. Hayley Raymond and Taylor Sehdev each chipped in with nine points.

Haddonfield’s defense was again up to the task against Collingswood, but the offense fell flat in a 26-20 loss. The Bulldawgs also fell to Moorestown (54-33) despite 15 points from Maddie Betley.

Haddonfield will take to the road for the playoffs as a No. 10 seed. It opens at Woodstown Monday Feb. 25.

WRESTLING

The Bulldawgs had just one match last week, falling to Highland, 39-21. Henry Klaus, Jake Klaus and Nate Finnegan recorded pins, while William Benedict scored a convincing 9-2 victory. Haddonfield will spend the next two weeks in the practice room gearing up for the District 28 Wrestling Tournament. The Bulldawgs also have one final non-conference match slated for Saturday.
