Haddon Township Sports Week

A tournament win for Hawks girls' basketball nets coach's 400th win.

The athletic teams at Haddon Township High School saw plenty of action over the holiday break, with multiple teams producing big efforts in tournament contests. The girls’ basketball team cruised to a title in the Paul VI Tournament, while the wrestling team hosted the Bart Payne Classic last weekend.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The Hawks have gotten out to a hot start this season, winning five of their first six games. Their most recent victory was a 43-41 win over Clearview in the opening round of the Woodstown Wolverine Tournament. Tyler Easterday led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Pat Burns and Trey Thatcher each netted 11 points. Haddon Township was able to seal the win at the free throw line, making 12 free throws in the fourth quarter. One day later, the Hawks suffered their first defeat, 60-50, to Woodstown in the finals of the tournament.

The holidays were good to the Haddon Township girls’ basketball team,
which won the Paul VI Tournament with a 64-42 victory over host Paul VI in the finals. Alayxiah Carr was the driving force in the win, pumping in a game-high 25 points. Bella Preziosi added 16 points, while Sarah Getzinger had 10.

The Hawks earned a 61-25 win over Triton one day earlier as Township jumped out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Carr and Preziosi again led the team in scoring, netting 17 and 15 points, respectively. The victory was a historical one as head coach Tom Mulligan—in his 20th season—earned his 400th win.

The Hawks will have three straight home conference games over the next week, beginning Thursday against Paulsboro.

Jason Marinak (138) and Elijah Camacho (182) each placed second.

As a team, the Hawks are off to a 2-1 start in the Colonial Conference, with wins over Collingswood and Lindenwold, but a loss to Audubon.

Haddon Township has a key conference test against rival Haddonfield Friday at Haddonfield.
