Haddonfield Sports Week

Basketball playoffs begin tonight and two Bulldawgs win regional wrestling titles to make school history.

Boys’ Basketball- They begin their quest for a South Jersey Group 2 championship tonight when they host Cinnaminson at 7 p.m. The Bulldawgs earned the four seed in the bracket.

They limp into the playoffs on a three game losing streak. After losing a tough one to Cherry Hill East the weekend before last, the suffered their worst loss of the season against Paulsboro, losing 62-41 against the undefeated Red Raiders. Twin freshman guards Nick and Robbie DePersia led the way for Haddonfield in the loss, scoring nine and eight points, respectively. Thursday saw the Bulldawgs lose another close game, losing 61-59 against Pennsauken. In that game, Haddonfield was unable to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. Haddonfield is now 19-7 on the season.

Girls’ Basketball- The girls also begin their quest for a South Jersey Group 2 championship tonight when they host Cinnaminson at 5 p.m. The team was also seeded fourth.

They won their only game last week, defeating Bordentown 49-41. Maddie Betley scored a game-high 21 points for Haddonfield, while Hayley Raymond and Catherine Senopoulos each had 13 points. The Bulldawgs used a 13-2 run in the first quarter to set an early tone. Haddonfield now sits at 18-6 on the season.

Wrestling- Rob Schlitt and Carson Stack will advance to next weekend’s state tournament in Atlantic City. Both won Region 7 Titles on Saturday. The pair made history for the Bulldawgs by both winning region championships in the same season.

Stack defeated Haddon Heights' Padric Lynch 5-1 in the final bout, which doubled as a rematch of the District 28 final match last weekend.  Schlitt beat North Burlington's Wayne Stinson in the 160 pound final, winning 4-3.  Tannenbaum also had a chance to join the pair, but fell in the fourth-place match.

Carson Stack, Rob Schlitt, Whitten Oswald, Phillip Tannenbaum, Stephen Holmes, Nate Thompson, Christian Kreps and Crawford Oswald took part in the Region 7 Tournament in Robbinsville. Crawford Oswald, Thompson, Kreps and Holmes all lost on Wednesday night’s first round. Whitten Oswald fell in the wrestleback quarterfinals, losing 9-6 over Nottingham’s Jancel Nunez.

Schlitt also recorded his 100th career win in Saturday’s semifinal, a 6-5 win over New Egypt’s Brad Schwarze, making him only the sixth Bulldawg to ever reach the accomplishment. Schlitt was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.

"He didn't have too much time to think about that [the 100th win] because the other kid had plans of ruining his big day," head coach Bill Heverly said via text message. "Robbie had to gut out a real tough match to only win 6-5 in a nail biter. Had he beat up the kid I feel the acknowledgment would have been different, but I feel that type gut check got him ready for the final. The kid pretty much got his due all in the same day."

Girls’ Swimming- The Bulldawgs' run came to an end in the , as Haddonfield fell to Chatham 102-68 in a rematch of the 2009 Group B championship meet. The Bulldawgs had a great season, capturing the South Jersey Group B title.
