Haddonfield Sports: Wrestlers Travel to Virginia

Catch up on all HMHS winter sports.

In what has been a busy sports season for Haddonfield Memorial High School, the winter teams have been putting together solid records, and look to make strong post-season pushes for state championships.

Wrestling- The Bulldawgs have put together a solid 8-5 start despite being hit hard by injuries in the beginning of the season. The season has been highlighted by wins over Absegami and conference rival Collingswood. The team also recently traveled south for the Virginia Dual Meets over the weekend, where the team went 3-2 against teams from Virginia. Robert Schlitt, a 160-pounder, was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the American High School Division of the meet. The experience, coupled with the return of Whitten Oswald and Chris Dengler, should give the Bulldawgs a boost going forward.

Schlitt has teamed up with 195-pound senior Carson Stack to give Haddonfield two legitimate threats for individual state championships. NJ.com has Schlitt ranked second in the 160-pound weight class, and Stack ranked fifth at 195. Both have been anchors for this team this season.

The team has matches this week at Timber Creek, Friday, 6 p.m.

Boys’ Basketball- The Bulldawgs have jumped out to a 9-2 record this season, which has surprised a few of the so-called “experts.” Haddonfield has used an aggressive 1-1-3 trapping defense to create turnovers and force opponents into bad shots. The Bulldawgs fast start has put them in prime position to capture the Liberty Division Championship. The teams’ biggest win this season came on January 10 against Haddon Heights, where the Bulldawgs won a key conference game 59-47. The Garnets were picked by many to win the division, and the rematch on February 7 may determine if the title is split.

Seniors Jake Sikkema, Mike Lacantena, Chris Biddle and junior Billy Griffin have led the Bulldawgs this season. Each of the four can fill up the scoreboard in a hurry. Sikkema has been one of the best big men in South Jersey this season, and Griffin has been a marksman from beyond the arc. Freshman twins Nick and Robbie DePersia have provided steady play at the guard spots as well. The team can score, and has the ability to go over 100 points against overmatched opponents. They scored 93 against Collingswood on opening night.

The team plays at Overbrook, Tuesday, 6 p.m. and at Collingswood, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Girls’ Basketball- The Bulldawgs have had success this season, getting out to a 6-3 start. The team has positioned itself nicely near the top of the division, and can win the Liberty title if a few things go their way. The team has wins over Haddon Heights, Paul VI and Audubon to its credit. Senior Catherine Senopoulos and junior Maddie Betley lead the team in scoring. Both can shoot the three-pointer with accuracy.

The team plays Saturday, 1 p.m. at Bishop Eustace.

Swimming- As usual, Haddonfield swimming is one of the dominant programs in South Jersey. The boys are 5-0, and the girls spot a flawless 6-0 record.

The girls compete Thursday at Cherry Hill West at 7:30 p.m.
