Haddonfield Sports Week

The girls' soccer team finally let up a goal last week, but it didn't keep them from remaining undefeated.

The phenomenal shutout streak put together by the Haddonfield Memorial High School girl’s soccer team came to an end last week, but the Bulldawgs’ perfect record did not. Meanwhile the boys’ soccer and tennis team’s kept putting wins on the board and the Haddonfield girls' cross-country team had a strong showing in Jackson. Tack on a third-straight win by the football team and it was another successful week for the Haddonfield athletic program.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The Bulldawgs’ season-long shutout streak came to an end last week but that didn’t keep them from improving to 9-0. Sterling’s Taylor Straub netted a hat trick against, but the Haddonfield offense had its defense’s back, scoring four times in a 4-3 win. Earlier in the week, Haddonfield defeated Collingswood, 4-0, thanks to two goals from Abby Czerniecki. Kylie Kirk also scored and Bridget Yako netted her first varsity goal.

BOYS’ SOCCER

It was a big week for the boys’ soccer team, which went 3-0, winning by a combined margin of 12-0.

Haddonfield opened the week with a 3-0 win over Collingswood. Brenden Werner scored twice and Johhy Alemi added the third goal. Ethan Schult made four saves for the first of his three shutouts in the week. After a 5-0 win over Sterling, Haddonfield capped its week with a 4-0 win over Lindenwold. Alemi scored a pair of goals, while Werner and Alex Johnston each added one.

Haddonfield has an important week coming up with games against West Deptford and Haddon Heights on tap. The Bulldawgs beat the Eagles 2-1 and tied the Garnets 1-1 earlier in the season so this week will go a long way in determining a Colonial Conference Liberty Division champion.

FIELD HOCKEY

It was a tough start to the week for the Bulldawgs, who were overwhelmed in an 8-0 loss to Collingswood, but the team responded nicely, bouncing back with a 3-0 win over Sterling. Suzie Clark scored twice and Morgan Sehdev also found the back of the cage. Kelsey Walsh made 13 saves for the shutout. The win over the Knights brought the team back to the .500 mark at 4-4.

Haddonfield has three upcoming games this week, as the Bulldawgs take on Lindenwold, West Deptford and Haddon Heights.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Haddonfield picked up two more Colonial Conference wins last week, defeating Paulsboro and Woodbury/Gateway in a tri-meet. Haddonfield’s win over Woodbury/Gateway was by 19-40, while their win over Paulsboro was 15-50. Alex Gigliotti was the first runner across the line, finishing in 18:02. Matthew Stewart was next at 18:07, and Chris Ehrhardt was third at 18:18. Also producing strong times were Chris Goings (18:41), James Spinelli (19:05) and Danny Stevens (19:17). Last weekend freshman Greg Pelose had a big effort at the South Jersey Shootout, placing second with a time of 15:35. Tom Proctor also did well, finishing ninth.

GIRLS' CROSS-COUNTRY

Several girls made the trip north to Six Flags Great Adventure Saturday morning, but it wasn’t roller coasters that were on their minds. The Bulldawgs’ competed in the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational with senior standout Meghan Malloy posting a third-place finish in her respective group. Malloy finished in 18:38. Teammates Lauren DeCoursey and Meredith Raphelson were the next two Bulldawgs to cross the line, finishing in 24th and 27th, respectively.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

There has been no stopping, or even slowing, the Haddonfield tennis team, which improved to 18-0 and has yet to be in a close match. Taylor Ng, Amanda Laciano and Victoria Martinez continue to dominate at singles while the teams of Erica Pascocello/Arpie Senopolus and Chelsea Brown/Sylvua Straus have thrived at the doubles scene. Both doubles teams have been playing so weel that they actually met in the finals of the Camden County Championships with Eric Pascocello and Arpie Senopolus taking the crown.

“Both doubles teams are certainly doing a lot of things well, though we are still giving away too many points with double faults and unforced errors,” Haddonfield coach Jeffrey Holman said. “The players individually and collectively have set very high goals for themselves and realize that they still must improve substantially if they hope to achieve those goals.”

FOOTBALL

The Bulldawgs recorded their third-straight win with a 36-7 win over Collingswood, Friday night. Haddonfield has a bye this week and will be back in action, Saturday, Oct 6, at Woodbury.
