More Than Just a Halftime Show

Twenty bands will compete at West Deptford High School Saturday night.

You’ve seen them at halftime on Friday night–now you can see them compete head-to-head.

will host the 38th annual Music In Cadence competition, South Jersey’s largest marching band show for the 2011 season, this Saturday, starting at 5 p.m.

Those who live within walking distance of some of the area’s top high schools can tell you about the drumming that takes place all hours of the night, the girls giggling and screaming as they dance their way across the 40-yard line, and the incessant clicks of the metronome cranked to top volume.

Despite school budget cuts, this activity has grown in our region over the past few years, proving that the arts are stronger than ever.

Among some of the locals, Triton will perform at 5:47 p.m. with their show, “The Golden Age of Hollywood,” and will treat you to classics from Casablanca to The Wizard of Oz.

(6:57) and (7:11) will take the stage back-to-back, highlighting a tough Group 2A, which has been dominated by this year. Timber Creek will not be in attendance Saturday evening, but will showcase their talents at Deptford Sunday.

West Deptford will close out the show, performing their 2011 program “From Dusk to the Dawn,” at 9:46. The show takes you from darkness to light, and currently has the band sitting second in Group 3 Open, trailing only Brick Memorial.

With 20 bands total performing, this is the largest competitive marching band show in South Jersey this season.

Tickets are $7 for students and seniors, and $10 for adults.
