Haddonfield Sports: A Season to Remember

Let's take a look back as the fall season draws to a close.

Haddonfield Memorial High School's fall sports season was wildly successful by any measure, and it's not over yet. Football has landed in it's second straight South Jersey Group 2 Championship game against West Deptford, a rematch of last year's title game, won by the Bulldawgs.

Meanwhile, a look back at other fall sports have plenty of highlights, as well.

Boys’ Soccer- The boys before ultimately falling short in the Group 2 semifinals, Junior forward Alex Johnston led the team in goals, posting 17 scores on the year. He also added four assists. Jack Speake also chipped in with eight goals and three assists. Senior goalie Vincent DelDuca made 83 saves and posted 13 shutouts.

Another highlight was head coach as Haddonfield head coach and the team notching it's 600th win as a program. Falana is only the sixth coach in New Jersey history to accomplish the feat. The win came on September 30 against Sterling. Falana gave his team and a group of fans, former players and his family a speech, saying,  “I’ve never scored a goal for Haddonfield, never made a save, never made one single play for Haddonfield. But I’ve been lucky enough to be on the sideline, enjoying the athletes, the soccer players, and the fine young men going out there on the field to make Haddonfield the school, Haddonfield the town, and Haddonfield the soccer program proud. The win is to you guys, not to me.”

The Bulldawgs finished the year with a 19-3-1 record.

Girls’ Soccer- The girls , beating Middle Township in a rematch of last year’s championship game before They also made it to theSenior forward Katie Johnston had team-high 26 goals on the season. Senior goalie Kellie Riley had 103 saves and 20 shutouts on the year. The Haddonfield defense only surrendered ten goals.

Coach Glenn Gess said of his team, “These kids have had a great season. Through all the stuff that they have been through, to battle back and to get to this point, they gave their best effort. These seniors went out on a high note.”

Haddonfield finished the year with a 24-2 record. 

Field Hockey- The Bulldawgs captured their , but . It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the young Bulldawgs, but they defied expectations in capturing another state title.

The Bulldawgs finished the season with a 22-2 record.

Tennis- The girls’ tennis team had one of its most successful years as a program, as the Bulldawgs once again took the Group 2 State Championship. That title was the fourth straight for Haddonfield, and the 19th Group title for the Bulldawgs. The 19 titles are the most of any school in New Jersey.

The season was highlighted by the performances of junior Taylor Ng, senior Catherine Stenopolous, and sophomore Victoria Martinez. Ng won the New Jersey Singles Championship, while the combination of Stneopolous and Martinez won the doubles crown. Both titles were the first individual titles of any kind by Haddonfield.

Cross Country- Both the boys’ and girls’ teams won the South Jersey Group 2 Championship. The boys finished fourth in the state meet, while the girls took sixth. Junior Meghan Malloy and sophomore Shelby Cain were able to qualify for the Tournament of Champions as individuals. Malloy took 15th in the prestigious meet with a time of 18:50. Cain placed 18th with a time of 19:08.
