Football: Haddon Twp. v. Haddonfield

Defense will be tested Friday night by the high-flying Hawks.

Last week the Haddonfield Bulldawgs scored early and often and whipped Collingswood in the season opener. They put 30 points on the board in the first quarter on their way to a 44-0 win.

While another 30 spot might be asking too much, the Bulldawgs still want to get off to a quick start and grab the momentum when they host Haddon Township tonight. The game is scheduled for 7 tonight but could be moved to Saturday at 1 p.m. because of the weather.

“Every week is a new challenge,” coach Frank DeLano said. “You have to prepare the same way for every opponent and you can never take anyone lightly. You have to prepare like every week is the Super Bowl. If you don’t, you’re cheating the kids and, if they don’t, they would be cheating themselves. All you can do is take care of the opponent in front of you."

In front of the Bulldawgs this week is Haddon Township, a 42-20 winner over Gateway last week. Township sophomore Casey Brown had two rushing touchdowns, one of 8 yards and another from 1-yard out, and scored a third touchdown on an 82-yard kickoff return. Junior quarterback Jake Campbell connected on nine-of-11 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns. He hit Carson Harter for 22 yards, TJ Hayn for 6 yards and Jim Madden for 8 yards.

“Haddon Township has a nice team,” DeLano said. “They always used to just run the Wing-T and throw the ball a couple of times a game. Last week the breakdown was 27 run and 17 pass. They like to spread you out, force you to cover all over the field. They have a kid, Boyle, who is only a sophomore. He is a tremendous player. He’s very explosive. Jake Campbell is only a junior and he looked good also.”

Last week the Haddonfield defense was stifling. The front seven dominated. Linemen Jim Cashman, Jack Knecht and Charlie O’Neill along with linebackers Robert Perkins, Carson Stack, Alex Walter and Matt Bhaya kept Collingswood offense bottled up deep in its own territory while the offense was putting points on the scoreboard.

Offensively, the Bulldawgs scored six rushing touchdown, including three by Chris Dengler who finished with 136 yards and scored on runs of 37, 11 and 53 yards. Against a Gateway team that did give up some points last week, the Bulldawgs will have to utilize the ground game to control the clock and keep Haddon Township off the field.

“There are three aspects of the game, offense, defense and special teams,” DeLano said. “If we are sound in all three areas and do all the right things, we’ll be alright.”
