Haddonfield Tennis Makes History

Bulldawgs win individual state titles for first time.

In a program that is as storied as Haddonfield tennis, making history is tough to do.

But history was made on Friday when junior Taylor Ng, senior Catherine Senopoulus and sophomore Victoria Martinez won the first individual tennis championships in school history.  Ng won the singles title while Senopoulus and Martinez won the doubles crown.

This year marks the first time in New Jersey history that players from the same school have won the singles and doubles titles.

Ng’s appearance in the final was the first time a Haddonfield singles player had ever made it that far in the tournament.  She made sure it would count by beating Linden’s Joanna Zalewski 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. Ng’s victory gave her an unbelievable 109-9 record through three years.

Senopoulus’ appearance in the final was her third time in as many years with as many partners. She was finally able to capture the title that had eluded her twice before. Her and Martinez defeated Holmdel’s Lauren Byrket and Alicia Lai for the third time this season. The pair had also beaten the Holmdel duo the day before, when Haddonfield beat the Hornets for the Group II State title.

But the Haddonfield tennis accomplishments did not stop there.

Coach Jeff Holman was inducted into the United States Tennis Association Hall of Fame on Saturday for his achievements as a scholastic tennis coach. The USTA sanctions the U.S. Open tennis tournament and amateur competitions nationally.
