SJ 10-Year-Old Makes Her Mark at Broad Street Run

Allie Hauer cruised across the finish line at the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on Sunday, holding her mother's hand. 

Mother and daughter finished the 10-mile race in 1:47:45. Allie, 10, was among the youngest of 34,012 finishers, according to official race results. 

"She wouldn't stop, she wouldn't slow down," Erika Hauer, 36, said of her daughter. "She could have kept going after that."

Allie, who turned 10 on April 29, said her favorite part of the race was seeing the mass of runners gathered at the starting line of the nation's largest 10-mile run. 

Along the race course, people cheered on the young dynamo, and sang "Happy Birthday" to Allie as she ran past, her mother said. 

(Allie and her mom wore matching pink T-shirts that said “Go Allie” on the front, and “10 Miles for her 10th Birthday” on the back.)

On Monday, Allie wore her race medal to , where she's a fourth-grader. 

"Everyone was talking about it in the hallways," Allie said Monday afternoon. 

Erika Hauer, a registered nurse, said that in light of the nation’s obesity epidemic among young people, she hopes her daughter will to lace up their sneakers and get moving.

Allie wants to run Broad Street again next year. But first, she and her mom have an even bigger challenge: They're signed up for the 13.1-mile Philadelphia Half Marathon on Nov. 18.
