BOE and Data Analysis: Important

The BOE election and the analysis of data are important for many reasons.  An article entitled, "Why you should pay attention to school board races this fall," on the Education Votes website, says:

"In most places, locally elected school board members make the decisions that impact the lives of educators and students every day.  School board members approve budgets, sign employee contracts, ... purchase new technology, ... explore merit-pay systems, ... spend the money on new classrooms or school facilities, stand up to standardized testing, and more."

In addition to these important issues, the Haddonfield BOE helps to control an annual budget of about $33 million.  This represents more than one-half (54%) of the $61 million in property taxes that Haddonfield collects.  In summary, the BOE election is important.

Besides the school tax, our taxes are used as follows: 27% County Tax, 17% Local Purpose Tax, and 2% for Library, County and Municipal Open Space.  As background, there are about 4,500 households, with an average assessed value of about $500,000, with an effective tax rate of 2.7%.

Data Analysis is Important

Another article on education, by the Center for Public Education talks about characteristics of effective school boards and highlights data analysis.  In particular, the article states that:

“effective school boards are data savvy: they embrace and monitor data… and use it to drive continuous improvement.”  The article continues, “high-achieving districts identified specific student needs through data and justified decisions based on that data.”
