The Brown Building, so named because it was made of brown sandstone, opened in 1870 at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Chestnut Street, according to" Lost Haddonfield" by Douglas B. Rauschenberger and Katherine Mansfield Tassini. A historian of the era said it was one of the most substantial and elegant schoolhouses in the state. It was torn down in 1962 to make way for the present Middle School and Central School.
