Engineers, coaches and parents talk about benefits and burdens of artificial turf.
The Haddonfield Board of Education on Thursday heard an in-depth presentation about the nature, composition and costs of artificial-turf athletic fields. The turf project has been a lightning rod for objections over a $16.9 million plan for a public purchase of the 18.7-acre Bancroft property adjacent to the high school. Public opinion in three meetings on the purchase in July was generally supportive of the plan, which would acquire the property for current and future school use and to preserve open space. A sticking point was over the inclusion of funds to resurface the high school football stadium with artificial turf and to construct a new artificial turf field there. Some supporters of the public purchase have said they would not …

One member voted against the Bancroft approval without releasing appraisal details.
The Haddonfield Board of Education on Tuesday approved a letter of intent to purchase the nearly 19-acre Bancroft parcel adjacent to Haddonfield Memorial High School. The borough Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the letter of intent last week. The letter now launches a 45-day process for the borough and the school board to appraise the property and draft an agreement of sale with Bancroft, a center for the developmentally disabled and acquired brain injuries But the BOE vote was not unanimous. At the end of a long public comment session, school board member Joe Ehrhardt recommended the board not move forward on its approval until both the appraiser and the public be given the information in an appraisal commissioned by the BOE …

Haddonfield's debate over artificial turf fields continues.
WANTED: Qualified Turf Science Manager At a recent meeting about the “Bancroft Deal,” I asked the BOE and commissioners to clarify a few things. I asked if the BOE and borough share services? Yes. I asked if any B & G or PW staff members hold a turf grass degree? No, but Tish said “they take classes.” I asked if anyone knew such a position exists—that there is a BS degree in turf grass science and management*? Their answer: “No.” Whether or not we install artificial turf, perhaps the answer is to add an expert in turf management to the budget (this position would be shared between the BOE and town)—this person would have the knowledge and expertise needed for caring for artificial and live turf (the athletic fields), as well as …
