Ed Borden Named Special Investigator for Collingswood Hoops Coach Bias Claim

Collingswood's school board fired the boys' basketball coach, but Ed Borden will launch an investigation into racial claims and alleged threats made during the saga.

It felt less like a school board meeting and more like the closing moments of It’s a Wonderful Life, but when it was all over, there was no happy ending for Collingswood High School (CHS) boys basketball coach Joseph McLoughlin or any of his numerous supporters. By the end of its meeting Monday night, the Collingswood Board of Education had a room of constituents crying out, “Shame on you,” while NBC-10 camera crews waited on the steps of Zane North Elementary School to interview the principal speakers. The board unanimously approved its roster of high school athletic coaches for 2012-13, and for the first time in years, McLoughlin’s name was not on the list. To the nearly 100 people gathered, that was the most important item approved on …

Haddonfield Sports Roundup

This week saw the end of the regular seasons for wrestling and swimming, while both basketball teams went undefeated.

It was another busy week in Haddonfield sports, as wrestling wrapped up its regular season and the basketball teams continue to make strong statements. Wrestling- The Bulldawgs go into the postseason riding a wave of confidence this week after three dominating wins. On Monday, the team celebrated senior night. The senior class is one of the most accomplished in Haddonfield history, having played integral roles on last year's team that defeated Paulsboro in the regular season and made the South Jersey Group 1 Final, as well as this year’s team. The night was celebrated with a 58-9 win over Overbrook. "The seniors are the model," said head coach Bill Heverly. "They are all true wrestlers who understand the sport and have exemplified the …

Bulldawgs' Girls Tighten Defense, Defeat West Deptford

Haddonfield held West Deptford scoreless over the final 7:20 of the game, to win 38-33.

The Haddonfield girls’ basketball team was determined to make sure there would be no repeat performance Tuesday night, after watching West Deptford senior Megan Kirschling pour in 20 second-half points, including the game-winning layup with just 15 seconds remaining, against them in early January. Not even the motivated Bulldawgs could have predicted just how good they would be defensively. Haddonfield held Kirschling scoreless in the second half and held the Eagles to just two fourth-quarter points in a 38-33 win in Colonial Conference Liberty Division action. “Coming out with that win is really great because it did not feel good when we lost that first time,” said Catherine Senopoulos, who had 13 points. “We have a big rivalry with West …

5 Memorable Moments: Boys' Basketball

The Bulldwags finished 23-6 and with a share of the Colonial Conference Liberty title.

1.   The turning point of the Bulldawgs season came in a loss to Rancocas Valley. On February 6, Haddonfield lost to the Red Devils 68-66 but they followed the loss with a 10-game win streak sweep them into the Group 2 playoffs. “Knowing we should have won that game, in its own way gave us confidence that we didn’t have before that game and now, we’re together as a team and believe we can beat anybody,” senior Wyatt Polk said. 2. Polk scored 23 and senior guard Anthony Parenti scored 25 in a 67-63 win over Colonial Conference rival Collingswood just four days after the loss to Rancocas Valley. Not only did the win make up for an earlier loss to the Panthers, but it set in motion a chain of events that allowed the Bulldawgs an opportunity …

Dawgs Fall In Boys' and Girls' Basketball

Despite a pair of losses in the Group 2 semifinals, the Haddonfield girls' and boys' basketball teams can look back on highly successful seasons.

The basketball teams from Haddonfield knew the task that had presented itself to each squad was not for the faint of heart. Both teams saw their season come to an end in the semifinals of the South Jersey Group 2 tournament as the boys fell to Middle Township, 68-47, and the girls to Point Pleasant, 66-40. The boys' season ended with a 23-6 record while the girls finished at 18-7. Both teams won tough quarterfinal games on foreign courts, and on Friday night they would face the same circumstances in the semifinal round against two very tough opponents. While the final results weren't the outcome either team had wished for, both came away with the satisfaction of seasons that eclipsed the expectations of most outside of either program. “I’…
