Haddonfield School Board Considers Foregoing April Budget Referendum

A new law approved by Gov. Christie will allow school elections to be changed from April to November and forgo budget referendums if increases are within 2 percent.

The Haddonfield Board of Education is considering foregoing the annual budget referendum in April because of a new law approved by Gov. Christie this week. The law allows for three options to forgo budget referendums and to move school board elections to November. Christie imposed a 2-percent cap on budget increases for school boards and municipalities last year. Now, if schools stay within the 2-percent cap, the governor will allow budgets to be approved by the board without a referendum. There are no municipal budget referendums. New State Aid Greeted With Cautious Optimism

State aid for the borough was not reduced. The schools will get nearly $319,000 when it received nothing last year.

The news this week of no cut of state aid to the borough and nearly $319,000 in aid for the school district was met with cautious optimism. “The schools are going to see some limited increase in aid, which is certainly something our taxpayers can take some heart from,” Borough Commissioner Ed Borden said. “It would have been virtually impossible to cut our municipal aid. The budget that we are facing is going to be very difficult and will necessarily result in cuts in services if we stay within that cap. And people are going to feel it.”  Borden was referring to a two-percent limit that Christie has imposed on on municipalities for property-tax increases.  Municipalities are now required to have a public referendum in order to raise taxes …

FDU Poll: 53 Percent Approve Of Christie

The governor's rating improves slightly from November.

As Gov. Chris Christie (R) makes his first State of the State speech Tuesday, 53 percent of New Jersey voters approve of the way he is handling his job, according to the most recent statewide poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind research center. Another 36 percent disapprove, according to the poll. The FDU poll measures his approval rating at slightly better than the 49-39 percent the center saw when it polled on Christie's performance in November. An October poll put his rating at 51-37 percent. “Voters are focused on finances, theirs and the state’s," Peter Woolley, a political scientist and director of the poll, said in a statement from PublicMind. "Voters didn’t get a tax hike at the state level as they did in past …
