Lions Club Says Mayor Did Not Help Determine Citizen of the Year Selection Committee

Tom Baird, of the Haddonfield Lions Club, clarifies mayor's role in controversy over selection committee.

Tom Baird of the Haddonfield Lions Club said this week Mayor Tish Colombi is not part of the club's board of directors and did not participate in a decision to drop the borough civic association from a selection committee to chose the annual Haddonfield Citizen of the Year. In a Haddonfield Patch story published on Dec. 27, Baird said:"The decision was made by the board of directors of the Lions Club. The mayor sits on the board and has one vote." Baird said this week he was referring to the mayor being part of the selection committee for the award and not the club's board of directors. Controversy Heats Up Over Mayor's Citizen of the Year Award

The Haddonfield Civic Association was booted from the selection committee this year. Some say it's a big deal, others say it's not.

A growing flap is stirring in Haddonfield over the selection committee for the annual Lions Club Citizen of the Year Award. The Haddonfield Civic Association, one of the borough's oldest and well-regarded groups, was excluded from the selection committee for the citizen of the year after decades of participation, and some are seeing red. "The issue of the Haddonfield Civic Association and their removal from the Citizen of the Year committee shows the pressing need for better communication and support between Haddonfield's many nonprofit town organizations," said Lee Albright, the president of the Historical Society of Haddonfield. The article is incorrect when it says the Board includes the mayor. The Board of Directors and the selection committee are two different things. There are five people on the selection committee for the COTY, one of which is the mayor, and none of which are Lions. The Lions do not vote at all on the selection, and in fact, other than Tom, who organizes the luncheon when the selection committee …   more ›

Video: Haddonfield Citizen of the Year

Betsy Anderson was grateful and moved to be named Haddonfield's Citizen of the Year.

Betsy Anderson was named the 2012 Haddonfield Citizen of the Year Saturday at the 40th Annual Mayor's Breakfast. A retiree and tireless community volunteer, Anderson led the annual Holiday House Tour that generated $17,000 toward the renovation of Haddonfield Memorial High School stage and auditorium. The Mayor's Breakfast was held at the First Presbyterian Church.
