Haddon Township moved to 3-1 with a wrestling win over rival Haddonfield Friday night.
Few matches could sum up Friday night’s showdown between the wrestling teams from Haddon Township High School and Haddonfield Memorial better than the bout at 160 pounds between the Hawks’ Dan Clemente and the Bulldawgs’ John Tedeschi. The two wrestlers matched up incredibly well, with Clemente getting the upper-hand by the slightest of margins and eventually winning 8-7. His victory was one of three, one-point Haddon Township wins that helped the Hawks pull away with a 39-21 victory. “I knew it was going to be a fun match and a closely contested match,” Haddon Township coach Brian Farnham said. “Tonight, we won pretty much all of the close matches and that was the difference.” Haddon Township held a 9-0 lead entering the bout at 160, …
Senior Renato Paoli recorded a pin in Haddon Township's win over Haddonfield.
For four years, Haddon Township High School wrestler Renato Paoli has spent workout after workout wondering what it would be like to score a victory over a rival wrestler from Haddonfield. It is a thought that has driven him past the sweat and through the exhaustion. “Every time I run and go up and down the steps in my school, it is so I can beat Haddonfield,” Paoli said. “That’s all I work for.” Paoli got that elusive victory Friday night and it couldn’t have been a bigger moment. Paoli pinned Haddonfield’s William Benedict in three minutes, 18 seconds to clinch a 39-21 win for the Hawks. With one slam of the mat by the official, years of frustration went out the door. “I’ve had tough matches here every time I have wrestled Haddonfield in…

Haddonfield and Hadddon Township hope balance will translate into victories on the wrestling mat.
Depth and balance are two words that were spoken of often by wrestling coaches Bill Heverly, of Haddonfield, and Brian Farnham, of Haddon Township. With the wrestling season just a couple of weeks away from opening, both coaches believe they have wealth of wrestlers ready to collectively help their teams to great things. “I think our strength is our balance,” Farnham said. “This is probably the most balanced team I have coached. We don’t have a superstar like Steve Nelson, but we are really strong across the board. We have a lot of kids who are going to have strong seasons.” Nelson was one of the most decelerated wrestlers in Hawks’ history. He placed second in the state at 170 pounds last year, suffering his only loss of the season (36-1…

Haddon Township wrestler Mike McCutcheon is coming off a 26-9 season.
Mike McCutcheon remembers his experience during wrestling’s postseason last year. He remembers the highs and lows, the preparation and the exhaustion. For McCutcheon, a senior at Haddon Township High School, the experience was not only one of the most beneficial to his athletic career, but also in life. “As far as life experience goes, it is by far the hardest thing I have done, both physically and mentally,” said McCutcheon. “I think after this year I may not have to do anything harder than wrestling, so I think it will have prepared me for life.” McCutcheon spoke after running a series of sprints around the hallways of the high school, Friday afternoon. McCutcheon is a captain and one of six seniors. He is also one of the reasons the …
